Jarvis Jones placed on injured reserve/designated for return

Jarvis Jones placed on injured reserve/designated for return

Posted by Mike Wilkening on September 22, 2014

The Steelers are losing one of their starting linebackers until at least late November.

The club placed Jarvis Jones on injured reserve/designated for return on Monday, according to the NFL’s transactions.

The Steelers’ starting right outside linebacker, Jones suffered a wrist injury in Sunday’s 37-19 victory at Carolina. According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, Jones has undergone wrist surgery.

Jones, 24, has notched 14 tackles and two sacks in three starts this season for Pittsburgh. He was the Steelers’ No. 1 pick in 2013. Arthur Moats is the top reserve behind Jones on the Steelers’ depth chart.

Jones will miss at least the Steelers’ next eight games. The earliest he can return to game action is Sunday, November 30 vs. New Orleans.

sucks, but better than being out all year

catches alot of grief here from a couple of posters, but he showed some flashes in 2.5 games. hope it heals correctly and he gets some meaningful snaps in the stretch run

Yeah it sucks because he was off to a really good start. 14 tackles and 2 sacks in the first three games. I think Moats can play very well outside for them (size, strength, experience) but this really hurts the depth and takes away some important development time that's so valuable to a 2nd year player like Jarvis.

In all honesty, I feel the move might make our D better. Moats is more seasoned and has the muscle to play OLB. Not saying JJ will never be good; he has shown a few flashes, but I don't think he's matured yet to be a full time NFL OLB. I think, at this point, Moats could be the better player. And, I don't mind Spence getting reps at ILB either.

I'm not saying it's a "good thing" but it doesn't have to derail us either.

Damn it. Wouldn't be surprised if James Harrison gets signed.

We need to sign someone at the position. Even if the team asked Harrison to return, would he do so just to split reps with Moates? Knowing Jones would be the starter when he comes off IR? Lot of questions there. Maybe Howard Jones just gets brought up from the PS.

or the Steelers re-sign Chris Carter?

There is no way that this is a positive for the defense. Jones was fine against the run and on pace for 10 sacks. Moats is nice depth but Jones is a better player.

Move Howard Jones to the active roster. He will likely not play any base defense but on special teams this rookie can help. Speed 4,54 with a very good motor. He was impressive at camp getting down field breaking down and making tackles. He is cut high but he can turn the corner. Obvious passing plays I might let him just tee off and see what he can do. Even if he is a one trick pony if that trick gets some qb pressures why not.

I just got an update to my phone from NFL.com saying that Steelers would re-sign Harrison, but can't find it on the site.

I just saw it on NFL.com, saying likely signing this week. Means he will probably be there for Wednesdays practice

                          James Harrison’s retirement didn’t last very long #Steelers #reunion

The #Steelers will be signing their own former star LB James Harrison over the next few days, I’m told.

Getting back to the injury, it is really too bad. Jones was having a good game, and showed multiple looks to the OT while getting pressure. I am hopeful that JH can bring as much, or more, if he still has something in the tank, but JJ was starting to show.

It will help Jarvis in the long run to be able to learn from both Joey Porter and James Harrison while he is rehabbing his wrist. Professor LeBeau with Peezy as a graduate assistant and Deebo as a personal tutor would provide a Master's level education on how to be a dominant Steeler OLB.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.
