The best answer that I heard to this subject today was "if centers could do this then why would every team in the league waste a valuable roster spot on a long snapper?" Think about it, if it was such a simple transition it would be done more often.

Now similarly imagine if Reed had to come in to punt because of Berger's injury. Let's then suppose he got off a 32 yard line drive that was returned 12 yards because it had no hang time. Everyone would have said "Well, what do you expect, he's not a punter. If he was any good at it why wouldn't he just take both jobs and free up a roster spot for a real football player. These guys are called specialists for a reason.
This is the correct answer. I long snapped most of my football career, learned the skill in Pop Warner about 11 years old. It takes lots of reps and lots of confidence. Harrison obviously had the confidence and not the reps. When the adrenaline starts to kick in, you use your left hand (if you are right handed), to keep the trajectory down. You don't throw the ball to the punter, it's actually a pushing/slinging motion thrusting both of your thumbs horizontally towards the punter. It might be one of the easiest ways to make it to the NFL, but if you miss one snap at that level you normally do not return the next season. I did it from Pop Warner through college.

It probably would have helped if our punter didn't have a hamstring pull so he could have jumped for the ball. It was luck, not lack of preparation in my opinion, And seeing Harrison's snap, (nice spiral good velocity), I'm sure he has snapped either at the HS or college level, as well as practiced it as a Steeler.
Hey, if the Steelers aren't confident with Silverback (FWIW, I don't know why they wouldn't be...the snap was pretty good, but it was just too high), I nominate sd steel.

Dude, can you be at the Steelers compound by tomorrow night?[/quote:g0xznnj1]

Ha ha, thanks for the vote of confidence! I only airmailed one in my career of 11 years my freshman year of high school if I remember correctly. And believe it or not, I still practice it a couple times a week when I'm showing off at Pop Warner practice where I currently coach my son. If you can get me a minimum contract I will be there! Otherwise I will stay here in San Diego dreaming!

the long snap? I'm sure Greg Warren considers that a perk of his job.
Really? Not one other poster on here wants to watch a bunch of women bend waaaay over and hike a football as hard as they can???

      Really!?!?!?

You can try, but you can never prepare for everything.

I agree, but would have liked to see them a little more prepared than they were. I don’t think their number two guy should be a starting LB that already plays ST.....even if he’s really good at it. Find someone else and allow Warren to work with him during practice throughout the year.

Hindsight is always 20/20....it makes it a little too easy for me to be critical.
