Steelers release ILB Kion Wilson, sign CB Lew Toler

Steelers release ILB Kion Wilson, sign CB Lew Toler

    By Jeff.Hartman on Jul 25 2014

The Pittsburgh Steelers made a surprising roster move on the eve of training camp by releasing ILB Kion Wilson.

Apparently, the Pittsburgh Steelers have "inside linebackers out the butt". This according to linebackers coach Keith Butler.

Due to their large number of players at the inside linebacker position, the Steelers have parted ways with a player that made two starts for the team in 2013 in Kion Wilson. Wilson, 27, started in weeks two and three for injured Larry Foote before being replaced by Vince Williams. Wilson had 12 tackles on his resume in 2013.

By waiving Wilson, the Steelers added cornerback depth by adding Lew Toler to their roster. Toler played college football at Western Michigan, as well as Rutgers. Toler's size is the standard size for the average defensive back, standing at 5 feet 10 inches tall. At his pro day Toler ran a 4.6 second 40-yard dash and has 8 NCAA interceptions under his belt.

Toler now is set to compete with the likes of Brice McCain, Antwon Blake, Isaiah Green, Devin Smith, and Shaquille Richardson for a spot on the roster most likely through special teams play.

Although Wilson, and now Toler, will be stretches to make the active roster in 2014, the Steelers making a move this close to training camp is a bit surprising.

Good. Worst player on the team. You know things were dire when he was getting to dress for games.

      Probably good news for Spence.
Tomlin: Let's unleash hell and "mop the floor" with the competition.

Those two UDFA Gator CB's are currently in camp with the Rams and Colts, respectively.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

A CB who runs a 4.6 forty? Usually not NFL caliber. Replaced one scrub with another.

4.6 can be fine. In this case, i doubt it

We really should have picked up one of those many guys with first round skills who is on the street right now instead. What's wrong with us?

--- Linebacker Kion Wilson, waived yesterday, is an example of how far the Steelers linebacker depth dropped last year. When Larry Foote was injured in the first game, Wilson started the next two games before giving way to rookie Vince Williams.

--- Lew Toler, the cornerback the Steelers signed yesterday, is 5-9 ½ , 190. He is an undrafted rookie from Rutgers. He runs a 4.61 in the 40. That should take care of their cornerback problem.

Huh???? Was Ed trying to be funny? I'd think Toler would be a longshot to make the team.
