Trio acquitted of stabbing Mike Adams

If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit.

That 19-year-old mantra from the late Johnnie Cochran perfectly captures the spirit of the American criminal justice system, which skews toward letting the guilty go free over imprisoning the innocent, via a ridiculously high standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

That principle made Wednesday’s acquittal of three men charged with stabbing Steelers tackle Mike Adams a no brainer. And that’s indeed what happened.

Two vastly different versions emerged at trial, with Adam claiming the men stabbed him in a carjacking attempt and the defense claiming Adams was drunk and loud and started a fight. With Adams’ blood-alcohol content measured at 0.185 percent, it becomes difficult if not impossible for a jury to buy his story strongly enough to overcome the very high reasonable doubt standard.

One of the men was convicted of escape and another was convicted of flight to avoid apprehension. None were found guilty of the far more serious crimes of attempted murder and aggravated assault.

The defense argued that Adams lied about the incident to stay out of trouble with the team. It’ll be interesting to see whether the ultimate outcome creates any issues for him with the Steelers. He’s entering the third year of a four-year contract signed in 2012.

Ummm...he is the one that was stabbed....

Was he driving at the time? Pulled over by the cops? Arrested?

He won't even be suspended by the NFL...why in the world would the Steelers release him?

"Why in the world would the Steelers release him?" You can't seriously be asking that question.

HE STINKS. Don't tell me about his potential, yadda yadda. At this point in time, he stinks.

And so that should answer the question as to how this could cause problems for him. If you stink, you better not bring any baggage with you. If you do, and something else relatively minor comes up, you're gone.

I doubt the Steelers are learning new details at this point. I'm sure they followed the trial and looked into the incident a bit themselves. And none of us were there, so best to focus on football and move forward.

Yup. Had he been a quality starting LT, different story. But he sucks. And getting hammered could be why he sucks.

Yea sure, getting liquored up has caused many athletes to suck. I remember the same he sucks stuff from fans about Max Starks. Maybe Adams just belongs at RT for awhile then switch back to LT later on as a seasoned pro just like Starks.

Why is the beyond a reasonable doubt standard "ridiculously high"? It's beyond a reasonable doubt. If there is a reasonable doubt, you go the other way. What the hell other standard should be used to possibly out people in prison? "decent chance"? "if it seems like it"? "if you think they might have"?

                      WTF?

                      Mongo.

Getting hammered is why Babe Ruth sucked...

Adams has been an under-producer because he lacks the fire in his belly to be great. If he were to ever dedicate himself to his craft he would be all world...little doubt in my mind about that. I suppose that is what frustrates me the most. I hold cautious optimism about him this season, hoping Munchak knows how to get the most from talent.
                            Trolls are people too.

How can you possibly be stabbed, an established fact with a hole in Adams' body, and the people who stabbed you are acquitted? That is freaking crazy.
"My team, may they always be right, but right or wrong...MY TEAM!"
