Steelers stuck on best available vs. position of need

I'm not sure the need is "huge". It really depends on Wheaton. If he ends up being a solid #2, we have little need for a WR.Trolls are people too.Comment

It absolutely does....and, if Wheaten steps up as a solid #2 this year... I also see some of those others being solid for us for #3 on back (namely Lance Moore), and another dark horse or two rising to the occasion (J.Brown, Moye, Heyward Bey) to round out the corp..
I guess I don't see WR as being nearly as big of need as several positions on defense.Comment

All the WR talent in the world didn't help Denver in the SB. Draft defense early and often.... ok with any defensive pick the Steelers make at 15.Comment

Unfortunately, the Steelers won't know anything about Wheaton when they draft in May; IMO, they have to go with what they know , which isn't much about Wheaton. If their guy falls to 1.15, I think they have to take him, whoever it may be.
I won't be crazy about it, but if BPA is their guy at WR, he'll be the pick in all likelihood.

The guy has been with them for a year now so I'm sure they know what they need to know about him at this point. I am one of those that do not see a need for WR in the front part of this draft as others do.. They picked up Moore and Bey in the off season, but no CB's.... They added a DL as well...It's obvious to me, they are looking for one of those CB's at 15....Nix in the 2nd would be huge....Unfortunately, the Steelers won't know anything about Wheaton when they draft in May; IMO, they have to go with what they know , which isn't much about Wheaton. Cowher didn't even want him. He was a Donahoe pick and a huge reach. Cowher wanted Kearse but was over ruled by Donahoe. Every one knew that they "needed" a WR but Cowher wanted the better player. That's why they turned around the very next year and drafted Burress after Donahoe was gone. When you start drafting for needs you get in trouble because you're overall talent isn't good enough. You don't pass up Kearse because you "need" a WR. You take the BPA and then fill in needs in FA or re-signing your own players.Comment

IIRC, Gilbride really wanted Edwards as well...Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.Comment

It's not best available vs. position of need. It's best available at a position of need, and since we have needs pretty much everywhere except for at QB, we could go pretty much anywhere at #15 and it would fill a position of need (well, there really aren't any RB's or interior OL that would be worth #15 in this particular draft, so those positions, plus QB, K, P, and LS will be the only ones ruled out completely in round 1). We have legit needs at DB, LB, DL, OT, WR, and TE, so any of those positions could legitimately be called best available at a position of need.Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.
Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.
We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.
We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.Comment

Why do we even bother to discuss this element? Obviously, they draft with BOTH factors in mind: best player and areas of need. Anyone who thinks the decisions do not consider both factors is drunk. Matter of fact, sometimes I believe they put too much emphasis on "best player available" making dumb decisions, such taking a punter in the 4th, a TE in the 3rd, who turned out to be worthless, an OLB when it wasn't an area of need in Bruce Davis. Other times, when they did draft too much the other way (on basis of need) they made failed picks like that bum Troy Edwards. Every pick should keep both elements in mind. Do you really think if they think the BPA is a QB, RB, OG that they would take one of those players? Of course not. And why are they having Barr come in for a visit? Is that not a waste of everyone's time? He won't be there at 15.Comment

To paraphrase one Chuck Noll: to not draft the BPA, is to eventually be beaten at that position...Cowher didn't even want him. He was a Donahoe pick and a huge reach. "And why are they having Barr come in for a visit? Is that not a waste of everyone's time? He won't be there at 15."
Name the players that played in the same team as Barr that might be of interest. Or those he went up against. Not every 'smokescreen' is useless if they gather information about guys they are interested in while they do it.The people that are trying to make the world worse never take a day off, why should I?

I'm sure they are doing their due diligence. The draft is fickle and sometimes players fall. They never expected DeCastro to fall but he fell many spots. Go look at all the mock drafts and you'll see many of them had him going 10+ spots higher. Maybe they learned from the Mendy draft. Mendy wasn't suppose to be there. He only fell around 5 spots or so. But the Steelers never even interviewed him. So it looks like they are making sure that doesn't happen again."And why are they having Barr come in for a visit?
