He got bad advice from his agent. Given all the great memories he provided, I can certainly overlook an error in judgment.

James Harrison wants to be remembered as a typical Steeler

Posted by Michael David Smith on September 6, 2014

James Harrison officially retired this week after an 11-year career that ended in Cincinnati, but Harrison wants to be remembered for what he did in Pittsburgh.

Harrison said he hopes he’s remembered with men like Jack Lambert and Jack Ham as one of the great Steelers linebackers.

“Playing linebacker for the Steelers was about going out and holding up your end of the bargain and making sure it was something fans would talk about and people remember. That’s what I did,” Harrison said. “I guess I want to be known as one of the typical Steelers linebackers, hard-working, and a guy that gave his all. The linebackers the Steelers have had from past Super Bowls and so forth, you don’t want to be the guy that comes in or the group that comes in and they are talking about Steelers of the past, teams of the past, this group was a great group of guys, these linebackers were a great group of linebackers. You don’t want to be the group that they say this group was okay. You want to be in that argument.”

Harrison will be remembered for his toughness, and for hits that sometimes crossed the line, especially as the NFL increasingly began to crack down on helmet-to-helmet contact. He might have been an even better player if he had come along 30 years earlier and played with those Steel Curtain defenses of the 1970s, when the NFL allowed some of the hits that have now been outlawed. He was a great Steeler, and a throwback to a different time in football.

#92 will always remined me of silverback. I know he hasn't played for us for a while but once he retired I truly realised he was not coming back. Harrison was a beast. Watching his highlights will never get old.

And I say if he put the pads on right now, he'd make the Steelers better, not in the long term, but the short term. There isn't anyone on this team even remotely close to bringing the passion and attitude that James brought to each and every game, Heyward is working his way there and will be that guy, but he isn't yet.

Imagine him coming in as an asst. LB coach, along with Porter. The building might not be able to contain all that intensity.
