Bengals to start Fitzpatrick over Palmer

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - The Cincinnati Bengals will start Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback on Sunday against the New York Jets, as Carson Palmer continues to recover from an elbow injury.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis made the announcement after practice on Friday and did not rule out the possibility of Palmer being the backup for the game.

"We're trying to get it not a week-to-week thing," said Lewis. "We want to get the thing calmed down so it doesn't give him any irritation or problems at all."

Fitzpatrick started two weeks ago in a 20-12 loss to the Cleveland Browns as he threw for 156 yards and a touchdown along with three interceptions and a fumble.

Palmer started last week's game against Dallas and threw for 217 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, but the Bengals still lost the game, 31-22, to fall to 0-5 on the season.

The 28-year-old Palmer has thrown for 731 yards and three scores with four interceptions in four contests this season.

Great. We get to play an 0-6 Bumgals and if Palmer needs to come back for that game we can have Woodley and Harrison put him out for the rest of the year.

Starting 0-6 should put the Bumgals on the road to implosion. Can't wait for the inevitable CJ meltdown.

I think he thought that one through Ruthless. He changed his name to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco...CJOC. Although...not many people actually use their middle name when reciting initials...but maybe he will insist.

As for Bungles 0-6 start...I sure hope that is the case as I will be in the audience at Paul Stain field that day. I can't wait to go...got some freakin sweet seats too, 12th row, Steelers sideline, around the Goalline-10yd line. And tailgating with a bunch of bungle fans that I don't know too well, so I will be the enemy!

I have a feeling that Carson may be out until the Bengals bye week. The Bengals have no reason to play him at this point. They need to take care of their investment and let the man rest until his elbow is completely healthy. If they keep throwing him out there under these circumstances then he will do way more damage than he needs to.

They need to take care of their investment and let the man rest until his elbow is completely healthy. If they keep throwing him out there under these circumstances then he will do way more damage than he needs to.

If this is the case, then the game between the Steelers/Bengals next week week will be like a pillow fight with a newborn baby.

Though the Bengals have been bad this year, they've played both the Giants and Cowboys tough. Let's just say I don't want our boys to be the ones to give them their "1" this year, KWIM?

You make a fine point Sugar. The Steelers have recently done poorly the week after a bye. They have also recently under-estimated "lesser" opponents: The Jets & Cards last year. The Raiders the year before.

This could be a trap game.

Ozey, but I have a feeling that the Steelers are a different team this year. I don't see them overlooking a divisional opponent at all. I like the attitude that this team shows every week, they seem to be a team that has it's head on straight. They seem to take each week as it is, I guess we will have to wait and see though. I think that if Carson is out it will be like another bye week, which will be a good thing.

I don't think Marvin Lewis underestimates what beating the Steelers would mean to the team and to keeping his job. While I trust that our boys will be properly prepared and motivated, it can be tough playing a team that hates you and has nothing to lose.

If I'm Marvin though, I'm waking up at night in cold sweats thinking about what Woodley and Silverback could do to Fitzpatrick.
