    Colbert encouraged by Spence's progress

PITTSBURGH -- The Steelers are without a third-round draft pick this year as they traded the selection to the Browns in 2013 for a fourth-round pick they used on safety Shamarko Thomas.

General manager Kevin Colbert made the trade knowing the Steelers have a good chance of recouping the pick albeit at the end of the third round as compensation for losing free agents last year including wide receiver Mike Wallace, cornerback Keenan Lewis and running back Rashard Mendenhall.

Here is another way the Steelers can, in a sense, recover the pick: a return to the playing field by inside linebacker Sean Spence, their third-round pick in 2012.

Spence continues to work his way back from a career-threatening knee injury he sustained in the final preseason game of his rookie season. And Colbert said earlier this week that there is a chance the former Miami Hurricanes star could play this season.

“He's certainly going to be in the mix as a possibility,” Colbert said, “but I think we'd be naïve to say that he's over the hump because nobody knows that at this point.”

That such uncertainty still clouds Spence's future is telling of how badly he hurt his right knee in August 2012.

Spence tore three ligaments in his knee, including his ACL, disclocated his knee cap and suffered nerve damage, putting his career in peril.

The injury was such a devastating one that last April Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler said it would be a “miracle” if Spence ever played again.

Spence has worked relentlessly to return to the field, and he and the Steelers saw some much needed light last October when Spence received medical clearance to practice on a limited basis.

The 5-foot-11, 231-pounder made it through just one practice but the Steelers were encouraged by what they saw -- and by the fact that a broken hand and not a setback with his knee shut down Spence for the rest of the season.

“Maybe that small sample that he gave us was enough to show that he can be fully recovered from this injury,” Colbert said. “Whether he can sustain it through an offseason, training camp, preseason, regular season, we won't know. But what he showed us in that one day of practice we're very encouraged where he is right now.”

Love to see him make it but workouts and games are two different things.

Everyone is pulling for the guy. But I have to admit, I'm more with Keith Butler's opinion than anyone else's.

You are right Eich. Everyone is pulling for the guy. I remember a Linebacker (from the panthers I think it was) who had a devastating knee/leg injury a few years back...and was playing at a high level this year. Hopefully Spence is able to make it back as well.

If Spence can make it back we should be doing pretty well at ILB. Timmons, Foote, Spence, Williams, Garvin.

Right... I'm not sure I would bring Foote back but I'd be surprised to see a 1st round ILB taken with the depth at ILB. To me, we have much bigger problems than at LB and one of those positional needs will be damn close to BPA whether that is CB, FS, OT or even WR or TE.

3 ACL tears... and he was a beast last year.

if they bring foote back AGAIN, i'm ditching my directv package and not wasting my money this year...

they shouldn't have banked on him last year cuz he sucked the year before. Though raw stats may mislead you (he had a fair number of tackles... 7 yards downfield).

Good call. Garvin has really surprised some folks this year. He's definitely bulked up since his days at WVU also. I look for him to continue to be a solid contributor on special teams...and maybe eventually help out on defense also.

Spence reminds me of Lloyd with the same motor and fire. I hope he makes it back and was worth the wait.

Sean Spence 'significantly ahead' of where Steelers thought he would be

                          By Neal Coolong

Post-Gazette reporter Gerry Dulac tweeted Friday linebacker Sean Spence appears to be on the road to recovery, and adds some fuel to speculation that Larry Foote was released because Spence will be able to compete for a starting position in training camp.

Steelers linebacker Sean Spence is "significantly ahead" in his rehabilitation efforts from a devastating 2012 knee injury, according to Post-Gazette reporter Sean Spence.

Spence suffered a major knee injury at the end of the preseason in 2012, and has not appeared in a game yet since the Steelers selected him in the third round of that year's draft.

It's easy to speculate at this point Spence's condition could have led the Steelers to decide to release veteran linebacker Larry Foote, but considering nerve damage was involved, and Spence's attempt to get back on the active roster last year after spending the first three months of the season on the PUP list failed, his ability to compete in training camp should be considered a blessing, not an expectation.

If he can, though, he can expect to compete with second-year LB Vince Williams for playing time alongside Lawrence Timmons, and whatever may come out of the draft and free agency.
