Report: Fernando Velasco will start at center for Steelers in Week 2

By Neal Coolong on Sep 13 2013

Velasco will replace Maurkice Pouncey in the team's starting lineup against Cincinnati Monday. Kelvin Beachum, who replaced Pouncey during the Steelers' Week 1 loss to Tennessee, may still see action at tight end.

The Steelers will enter Paul Brown Stadium with its newest roster member starting for the team.

Post-Gazette reporter Gerry Dulac posted on the site's subscription side that Fernando Velasco will start Monday when the Steelers and Bengals kick off in their primetime game. Velasco, signed Monday, has apparently gotten comfortable enough to snap, replacing veteran Maurkice Pouncey, who tore his ACL and MCL in the Steelers' Week 1 loss to Tennessee.

Velasco was released by the Titans this training camp, largely due to his lack of position flexibility. The Steelers needed a center, and may have gotten a very effective one, even if he can't play guard.

The Steelers have failed to see a running back rush for 100 yards or more since Isaac Redman hit 147 against the Giants in Week 9 last year. Cincinnati, a strong run-defensive team, will look to extend that streak at 8:40 p.m. ET Monday. Both teams are 0-1 heading into their Week 2 games.

Who knows, maybe Pouncey will come back to LG next year. We still need at least one more tackle though.

Velasco can't play OG? He started 3 games at that position last year...

The reason he was released was purely monetary...
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

It was twofold. They draft Schwenke and Rob Turner played better than they thought he would at center when they signed him. That makes the most expensive guy disposable. Saved the Titans 2 million dollars.

Wish we could draft so well that good linemen were expendable.

Probably our best lineman because he's been coached outside of Pittsburgh. Once he starts drinking the water here, look out

Madden 25 has him rated as an 82, 6 points behind Pouncey.

I went back to look at Fernando's draft write-up, and he sounds a lot like Ramon Foster: He's a slow-footed, SEC veteran who is one of those just-gets-the-job-done kind of guys. Given the amount of grief Ramon normally gets, I'm guessing this Fernando love will quickly die.
I wasn't hired for my disposition.

nah.. he isn't getting more grief because the board thought he was the savior to our OL problems.
