Sixth Round pick Vince Williams sign

    Pittsburgh Steelers Ink Vince Williams

By Michael Uhlhorn on May 20 2013, 2:35p

Steelers sixth round pick Vince Williams has signed a four year contract on the first day of OTA's, making him the second player from the 2013 class under contract.

The inside linebacker is expected to compete for a roster spot mainly serving on special teams, but the young man will compete for a larger role in the defense - particularly in run defense - if he can develop a bit during training camp and the pre-season.

Neal has already expressed his love for his "favorite player" in this draft, taking the time to highlight Williams' ability to take out 300 pound interior lineman and still make a play on the ball carrier.

A similar sentiment was shared by Steelers linebacker coach Keith Butler, highlighted in the Post-Gazette: "The thing that attracts us to him is that he will hit you," Butler said. "There are two things you can't teach linebackers in this league. One of them is how fast are you going to be and the other one is will you hit somebody."

Butler also spoke about viewing Williams as an eventual three-down linebacker, and the aforementioned Post-Gazette article makes comparisons between Williams and current Pittsburgh starter Larry Foote.

I don't know about you, but I'd be excited if the Steelers have found a young Larry Foote in the sixth round. Welcome aboard Vince.

I hope he plays as advertised. I can't remember being as excited about our 5, 6, and 7 round picks as I was this year. I think we got some crazy potential value in this draft. Can't wait to see all the day 3 picks.

Hopefuly he can be a solid special teams contributor this year and challenge for a starting job next year. Unfortunately, I think Spence is out of the equation or he would be the starter this year. His injury unfortunately put us a year behind at the ILB position.

I hope y'all aren't getting your hopes up to think this guy is going to be a complete stud. I hope he is, but all I can picture is "Williams would be this great player if it weren't for DL"

hoping he's a solid backup and good fill-in in the event of injury. my favorite mid-round ILB was the kid from alabama, but, vince wasn't far behind.

Yeah! What players are actually good in DL's defenses?
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

Well, if you're not being tongue in cheek, I'd say there have been a few that never developed into good players. IMO not DL's fault. but SOME people spew crazy talk about him all the time.

I have no exposure to the guy but from his senior "highlight reel" I was left going whats all the hub bub. The guy over shot many tackles only to correct and get a hand on the guy. He didnt tackle or hit all that well. He didn't play fast. He did look like he had good vision to sort through trash and played with some strength. I was left with an eh. Maybe some FSU fans can change my mind about this guy.

My bro in law is an alum and FSU fanatic. He barely watches NFL at all and he usually calls me after the draft to tell me about the Seminoles the Steelers drafted. Normally he is overly excited about them. With this guy not so much. He didn't really have anything bad to say, but nothing really good to say. Just an okay guy who goes out there, makes some plays but nothing to get too excited about.
