Steelers rookie camp observations (day 1)

The observations are from Mark Kaboly, so take it with a grain of salt. He's probably the worst guy there is covering the Steelers.

http://blog.triblive.com/steel-mill/2013/05/03/steelers-rookie-camp-observations-day-1/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter

The Steelers held a two-hour rookie mini-camp session on Friday that was open to players who have three or less credited games to their resume. (Check out video of Landry Jones talking to the mediahttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGu25r_ymSU)
Now, that left guys out like John Parker Wilson and Larod Stephens-Howling, but the Steelers were able to get a look at all of their draft picks, undrafted free agents and workout guys.

So here is what jumped out to me:

*First, Ben Roethlisberger was in the building. I just wanted to get that out of the way.

* Forty-one players participated in the first day of rookie camp.
* The Steelers had eight guys in for tryouts who took part in the camp — RB Ryan Clarke (WVU), LB Terrance Gavin (WVU), S DeShawn Grayson (UTEP), CB Isaiah Green (Fresno), CB Jarred Holley (Pitt), DTAntoine Hopkins (Virginia Tech), S Andrew Taglianetti (Pitt), QB Caleb Terbush (Purdue). Don’t look for any of them to be asked back.

* My initial thoughts with the group players on the field was this: Boy they are small. Now, maybe that’s because I am used to seeing mammoths like LaMarr Woodley and Ziggy Hood, so that’s to be expected. But still, first-round pick Jarvis Jones looked tremendously undersized especially compared to Woodley and Jason Worilds. Now, his speed, that’s just fine. Jones showed that off a couple times in getting around tackle Mike Farrell, but my goodness he needs to put on some girth. That goes for them all — Landry Jones, Markus Wheaton, Curtis McNeal, Reggie Dunn, and so on and so forth.

* Go ahead and keep calling Le’Veon Bell a big back. It just makes you look foolish because Bell isn’t anything near being a big back (when I think of big back I am thinking Jerome Bettis, Michael Turner, Isaac Redman, LaGarrett Blount, Brandon Jacobs, Steven Jackson). Bell is listed at 6-1, 244 but said he is more around 230 but you sure can’t tell that by the way he looks. Bell showed some of his nimble nature that he was known for in college during the first day, but please, please don’t call him a big back. To me, Bell looks like Matt Forte.

* Landry Jones doesn’t throw a good ball. Or at least he didn’t throw a good ball on this particular day, in my opinion. Caleb Turnbush, a rookie out of Purdue, threw a much better ball.

* I can see why John Mitchell was so excited about seventh-round pick Nick Williams. Sure, he is a little raw, but of all the people, he was the most physically mature guy out there.

* Safety Shamarko Thomas is going to be a stud. He just passes the eye test. Now, if we can just get him to stop saying “man” about 37 times during a five-minute interview … man. Just kidding. I talked to him for a while and he’s a nice kid with even a better story.

* The one draft pick that looks like he has it all is fifth-rounder Terry Hawthorne, a cornerback out of Illinois. He appears to be an early candidate for sticking to the 53-man roster come September.

* Who drew the biggest crowd Friday? Try new special teams coach Danny Smith. While Smith was going through special teams drills with the players with the enthusiasm you expect from a special teams coach, virtually the entire coaching staff gathered around to watch including Mike Tomlin, Keith Butler, Carnell Lakeand Dick LeBeau.

* Markus Wheaton is a fast version of Antonio Brown.

*Curtis McNeal is small … wait, I already said that, but wow. He is small.

The Steelers will hold their second day of rookie camp/orientation on Saturday.

Another one from Kovacevic with almost no useful observations. It is just a rookie mini-camp after all.

|Trib Total MediaA few impressions from the Steelers’ rookie camp, Day 1, here on the sunny South Side …

>> The club had a lively, loud practice albeit without pads. No absences, injuries or other surprises. All according to schedule.

>> Jarvis Jones
just looks like a 3-4 outside linebacker. Something to be said for that.

>> Le’Veon Bell
… first thought you have is how young he looks. Only 21.

>>
It was a session that meant almost nothing, but the guy who still leaps out at you is Shamarko Thomas, the fourth-round safety out of Syracuse. He closes like … well, a shark. All over the ball.

Here is Jim Wexell's take from Rookie Mini-camp day 1:

2m

It was only the first workout in shells for
#Steelers rookies, but to me the most impressive was Shamarko Thomas. A brick ****house. Sudden.
A theme seems to be devloping. Sharko Thomas already making an impression.

Kaboly's observations always make me scratch my head. He always comments on weird stuff like this. I don't get this comment at all. Kid is 230lbs at 6'1. He's built just like Stephen Jackson and Matt Forte.

Those are big backs that can run. Bell has some thick legs.

They are limited by the CBA for hours they can do these orientation/rookie camps. They only have so many hours.

i realize that. i just dont understand(especially rookies) how you can get much accomplished in 2 hours. i've coached plenty and time flies when you try to get everything done that is on your daily practice itinerary.

I get it, but they're doing what they can with the time they have. It is just really an orientation time. I'm sure there is more going on outside the practice field this weekend.

Kaboly's statements remind me of Smizik or Dejan writing about the Pirates like he is looking for stuff to be negative about.

First practice goes well for rookies

Teresa Varley
Steelers.com

Steelers’ rookie minicamp kicked into full gear on Friday, with players getting their first taste of an NFL practice.

And from the sounds of things, despite there being a case of information overload, it was successful.

“Everything went good,” said second-round pick Le’Veon Bell, a running back from Michigan State. “It’s a little different from college to an NFL practice. I don’t think my first day could have gone any better. I didn’t mess up any assignments or anything. That was a good thing. I am just out here competing with better competition.”

The group went through early morning meetings, before hitting the field to put what they learned in the classroom to the test.

“It went good,” said quarterback Landry Jones, the fourth-round pick from Oklahoma. “I had a lot of fun out here, but obviously there is still a lot of learning for me, putting in the whole offense and getting into all of it. I had a good time. It was a great opportunity.”

Jones said picking up the offense is like anything else new, it’s going to take time to become comfortable with it.

“There is just more information (than college),” said Jones. “I just need to get in there and study my playbook, but overall I thought it was a pretty positive first day. I am here to learn football. They gave me the opportunity to come and play so I am here to play some football and have some fun.”

The feeling was the same down the line, players anxious to have fun, while at the same time competing and showing what they can do.

“I want to go out and compete,” said Bell. “I want to get my feet under me and get used to these NFL practices and the NFL competition. The guys out here running around are a little faster. I am just trying to get used to it and get a feel for it. That’s what makes me better and the people around me better. That’s what will make this team better. I have to go out there and do some good things. That will put me in the right direction.”

Bell, whose mother and grandfather grew up Steelers’ fans, was in Pittsburgh following the draft at the team’s Fan Blitz, and said he couldn’t wait to get back for the minicamp.

“This is my first time that I can remember being so excited for practice” said Bell. “My family grew up as Steelers fans. They are really happy for me. I can’t wait to talk to my mom and tell her how my first practice went.”

At least Kaboly gave us some kind of insite on more then a player or 2. Man I hope someone writes a tad more on the first day with some depth. The media sucks! Now if there was "bad" news to report there would be a ton to read. WTF. Yes I know it is just rookie camp but I want more dang it.

Also glad to see the Shark passes the eye test! Hope to see Troy, Shark, and Clark on the field at the same time.

a 6'-1" RB is big IMO... Bettis he ain't but Bell looks big to me...

Jarvis is a little light but I wonder if that is part of the reason he tore up the SEC.

I also know that Jarvis wanted to be a Steeler. Love it when guys go where the WANT to go...

Can you imagine (as a fan) being a kid with the talent to get drafted by the Steelers... you'd do everything you can to keep the tradition going.
