Here is the last ten #1 picks by the Steelers.

2003 16 Polamalu, TroyTroy Polamalu DB USC [m]
2004 11 Roethlisberger, BenBen Roethlisberger QB Miami (OH)
2005 30 Miller, HeathHeath Miller TE Virginia
2006 25 Holmes, SantonioSantonio Holmes WR Ohio State [n]
2007 15 Timmons, LawrenceLawrence Timmons LB Florida State
2008 23 Mendenhall, RashardRashard Mendenhall RB Illinois
2009 32 Hood, EvanderEvander Hood DT Missouri
      2010 18 Pouncey, MaurkiceMaurkice Pouncey C Florida
2011 31 Heyward, CameronCameron Heyward DE Ohio State
      2012 24 Decastro, DavidDavid DeCastro G Stanford

Looking at this list tell's me the Steelers have done pretty good considering we usually picked later in round one. Notice Troy, Ben, Timmons and Pouncey all picked in the teens are all great players, and you can include Miller being picked at 30. Even Mendy had a few good years here.

Something else you may want to look at is from 2004 to 2006 the Steelers drafted all offense, the idea we pick defense one year and offense the next doesn't mean it will stay that way.
Trading back could certainly be an option, but if you look again at the players we picked in the teens they all were great picks for us.
With the team needing future starters and some immediate help there could be discussion which way is best for the Steelers to approach this years draft.

The most recent five #17 picks are pretty good. The first 5 are poor.

Freeman was an excellent pick. He has had been a little up and down, but he still has the potential to be an elite QB. He is very talented and athletic. Definitely a franchise QB. Iupati is an all pro and a stud. Solder is making strides in NE. Cherilus is an ok RT.

From the first five, DJ Williams and Greenway are decent (but were over drafted), Moss was a bust, Pollack couldn't stay healthy but showed potential. Johnson was a journeyman.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.
