Steelers one of 3 teams interested in Dwight Freeney

Trio of teams after Dumervil, Freeney

Posted by Mike Florio on March 21, 2013

Last Friday, the Broncos cut defensive end Elvis Dumervil after a last-minute effort to re-do his contract imploded at the last minute.

Now, a trio of teams hover over Dumervil and former Colts defensive end/linebacker Dwight Freeney.

Per a league source with knowledge of the situation, the Steelers, Ravens, and Broncos remain in play for both players. Currently, Dumervil’s decision is expected to come down to Baltimore and Denver. Whichever of that duo doesn’t get Dumervil becomes likely to land Freeney, with the Steelers as the possible alternative destination.

The fact that Dumervil remains on the right side of 30 makes him more attractive than Freeney. In Baltimore, Dumervil would help reverse the recent bleeding. His addition also would constitute the ultimate tweaking of the Broncos, who lost in dramatic fashion to the Ravens in the postseason.

While the Broncos want Dumervil back, the fact that last Friday’s offer evaporated after agent Marty Magid failed to fax the paperwork to Denver on time has created some hard feelings. The Broncos have blamed the lower package on the cap acceleration resulting from the termination of Dumervil’s prior contract, but the fact that future cap dollars have been pushed into 2013 easily can be remedied via a structure that nudges cap dollars that otherwise would count this year into the future.

Freeney is not suited for a 3-4 IMO. Looked lost last year with Indy.

I think both are better suited in the 4-3 but I'd take either over Worilds.

the Steelers must agree also since they have now expressed interest in FA OLBs Butler, Dumervil and Freeney.

Dumervil would light it up in a 3-4. Just don't think the Steelers can pony up.

Steelers have now raised their offer for Dumervil to 5% above league minimum and for Freeney to 2.5% above league minimum. . .hoping to hear back from these players soon. This just in: Steelers are interested in Adrian Peterson and Darrell Revis as well.

Why Freeney when you could get Harrison back for the same price?

I can't see any way or reason why Freeeney would happen.

Butler more than likely will be signing with the Saints, if he hadn't yet.

The Steelers couldn't keep James Harrison- a better player than Freeney at this stage of things. Can they get DF for cheaper? IMO, it's better just to take their chances with Jason.

I'm wondering about this too. It's not like the Steelers are regularly big in the FA market anyway, so why the posturing? Perhaps I'm too far in Steelersland, but to me it's making the FO look a little goofy.

(Now watch them actually sign one of these guys and make me look like a DA)

The Steelers are interested in every player under the Sun, once they see the asking price the Sun goes down.

I wonder how Worlids feels about all the disrespect he's getting reading almost everyday about the Steelers looking at bringing in someone in?

Worlids is our best option at this time, when September rolls around he should be like a crazed dog who's been locked up for three years.

Maybe they do their due dilligence. Like if Dumervil would take X dollars they would cut Ike or cut Troy or extend Ben and eat the dead money to have that player.

I guess I'm wondering about the media coverage. Don't most teams do at least some DD on name FA's? Why do the Steelers have to be in the press about it?
