35% Ben Plays Sunday.....

    For what it's worth:

    Report: 35-percent chance Roethlisberger plays

As the football-following world waits for the puff of white smoke that will let us all know whether Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will be riding a white horse (a really big white horse) in to M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday to save his team for another batch (see what I did there?) of turnovers, the most specific report regarding his availability has emerged.

ESPN’s Ed Werder reports that Roethlisberger has a 35-percent chance of playing.

Though we’re not quite sure how anyone has arrived at that number, each team has to engage in a similar exercise every week. “Doubtful” means there’s a 25-percent chance a player will play. “Questionable” connotes to a 50-50 coin flip. (Despite popular belief, “probable” doesn’t mean 75 percent, but that there’s a virtual certainty the player will be available for normal duty.)

If the number really is 35, the Steelers will have a hard time choosing between “doubtful” and “questionable” when the time comes to turn in the injury report. Maybe they’ll say he’s doubtionable.

Regardless of the label, we’ll be shocked if he doesn’t play. The notion that the dislocated rib threatens his aorta came from no one but Ben himself, and if he’s in no danger of serious injury the question becomes whether a less-than-100-percent Roethlisberger is better than the alternative.

Based on what we saw last week in Cleveland, is it even a question?

If Ben isn't 100% there should be a 0% chance he plays...there shouldn't be a question at all about that!

He is too importnat to put out on the field and repeat the awful performance we saw during the SF game last year. Let him get healthy and if that means we miss the play offs this year so be it. We can have fun talking about a really good draft pick.

Putting Ben out there hurt is an act of desperation we don't need.

I feel similarly. In my mind, Ben should only play if: 1) The chance of significant reinjury is very low, and 2) He is ABLE to play well enough to think he'd be a help.

      In that order.

We got our "6-PACK" - time to work on a CASE!

HERE WE GO STEELERS, HERE WE GO!

If Ben is hurt as bad as he was going into the SF game last year, then no question, you don't play him.

But I would argue that he can--and has--been quite effective at less than 100%. If you only let him play when he's 100%, he might only play 5-6 games a season.

Ben should sit. I really don't care if we lose to these puds. Let them get over confident so when we face them in the playoffs with a healthy Ben, we kick their teeth in and break their hearts again.

If Ben and the coaches and the medical staff all concur that he should be able to give it a try this weekend, I have no problem with that...he's a warrior. But if they let him play, and it's obvious early on that it isn't working, Tomlin better have a hook ready to go and use it.

Ben's injuries impacted him negatively against SF last year, but Tomlin left him in anyway.

Byron's injuries impacted him negatively against BAL a couple weeks ago, but Tomlin left him in anyway.

If Ben is a go this week, Tomlin cannot just leave him in anyway if his injuries continue to impact him negatively. He has to make a cold, ruthless Colin Kaepernick/Alex Smith type of decision in the best interest of the team based on what he is seeing out there (don't necessarily trust what Ben tells you, because he will always say he's fine...go by what you see out there on the field).
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

What makes you think we will make the playoffs if we lose this game? We'd be 6-6 with 4 games to go...I think our playoffs begin this Sunday.

That doesn't mean we should put Ben in. But if he's not in risk of severing an aorta, and he can throw a decent ball downfield...if he's at, say, 75 to 80 percent overall, he'd still give us our best chance of winning, IMO.

Now they say no, he will not play:

Ben Roethlisberger will not play Sunday vs. Ravens

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger has tried to practice over the last two days. It hasn't helped his chances of playing Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens.

NFL.com's Albert Breer reported there's a "limited chance" Roethlisberger plays against the Ravens, according to a Steelers team source. Breer said that Roethlisberger is regaining strength in his right shoulder, where he sustained an SC sprain just under three weeks ago. The source said Roethlisberger looks "better" in practice, but isn't where he needs to be yet.
                  Harrison: Week 13 Power Rankings
Twenty-six of the NFL's 32 teams are on the move -- some up, some down -- in Elliot Harrison's updated pecking order. Perhaps most telling about Roethlisberger's status: He sounded somewhat resigned to watching Charlie Batch play again in comments he made Thursday.

"I firmly believe that (Batch will play well)," Roethlisberger said, via the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "They know what he's capable of. He's been doing it a long time. They respect him. I think he's ready to rise to the occasion."

Those aren't the type of quotes Roethlisberger would be saying if he truly expected to play. It looks like Batch will get another start. Batch has been a great asset over the years, but the Steelers surely hope it's the last start of his 15-year NFL career.

                  UPDATE:
Ben Roethlisberger will not play Sunday, Albert Breer is reporting via a team source.

This is not surprising....It was an injury to his throwing shoulder and ribs...It needs time to heal and regain strength....It is not worth the risk of set backs by brining him back to early.

I have very little confidence that we will win this game anyway...with Charlie playing or a 50% Ben....The OL is in shambles at the moment as well.

Hopefully I am completely wrong here...

I think we have a shot at playoffs even with a loss...assuming we win out. However, this will depend on the status of Ben's health. It is much more likely that we miss the playoffs this year...How can a team that loses to Oakland, Tennessee and Cleveland expect to do anything in the playoffs.

Although we have been in every game, we just cant seem to get the job done. The team is not bad, but we are definitely sitting on the wrong side of the fence...We are a good football team, but just not an elite team...for whatever reason.

If we are 9-7 we more than likely are in. If sitting a 75% Ben this game gives us a 95% healthy Ben come the SD game, then so be it. If we don't cough up the ball we may beat Baltimore with Batch.

Right now, we are 6-5, tied with Cincy for the 6th and final playoff spot. We hold the head-to-head tiebreaker against them so far, but play them again right before Christmas. That's the most important game of the year. Sweeping the Bengals would assure us the tiebreaker against them, and there really isn't that much else behind them.

Miami is a game behind us at 5-6, but they still have to play New England twice and travel out to San Francisco, so I see a 7-9 record in their future. Other than that, you have a foursome of 4-7 teams (Jets, Bills, Titans, and Chargers). Do you see any of those teams winning 5 straight games to close out the season at 9-7? I don't either.

So, realistically, we are just battling Cincy right now in order to get into the playoffs. And if we happen to get in, even as the #6 seed, we all know what can happen (particularly if Ben, Troy, Woodley, Antonio, DeCastro, Colon, Adams, etc. are all healthy come January).
