You mean none of you "die hards" could create a thread wishing this team a Happy 80th Birthday?
You front running heathens!
Good find. 79 years ago when Rooney started this team, they were the Pittsburgh Pirates (which is my personal reason for believing all fans should wear a Pirates cap along with their Steelers jersey on game day).
Technically they didn't become the Steelers until 1940. In 43 they were the Steagals and in 44 the merged with Chicago Cardinals. So technically the Steelers only existed for 70 years + or - 4 years depending on the dates when the name changes took place.
Any one know the exact amount of time the Steelers have been called the Steelers and not the Pirates, Steagles, or Carpits?
On July 8th, 1933, Art Rooney founded what would become one of the greatest sports franchises in all of history. No exaggeration. For $2,500 back then (or $50,000 in today’s inflation), Rooney founded the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Steelers of today didn’t become the Steelers until 1940 when the Post-Gazette ran a contest with Rooney on renaming the team.
So raise your Lombardi trophy shaped glass filled with Iron City Beer high in the air and toast the birthday of the Black & Gold… the greatest franchise in all of sports…. The Pittsburgh Steelers.
