Report: Steelers in running for RB Tolbert

A usually quiet Steelers team in free agency might be poised to make a key addition.

Pittsburgh is considered the favorite to land Chargers free-agent running back [URL="http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/11658/mike-tolbert"]Mike Tolbert[/URL], according to the [URL="https://twitter.com/#!/UTKevinAcee/status/180841098426597376"]San Diego Union-Tribune[/URL]. The[URL="http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/car/carolina-panthers"]Carolina Panthers[/URL] are also believed to be interested in Tolbert.

While there is no reported visit set up, this move would make perfect sense for the Steelers. Pittsburgh needs to add an experienced runner because [URL="http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/11257/rashard-mendenhall"]Rashard Mendenhall[/URL] is expected to start the season on the physically unable to perform list after undergoing ACL surgery in January and backup [URL="http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/12898/isaac-redman"]Isaac Redman[/URL] has never been a featured back for an entire season.

Tolbert, 26, is a battering-ram runner who fits the Steelers' old rugged persona on offense and he's a valuable receiver who boosts the Steelers' recent pass-first philosophy. As a runner, he'll give you four yards per carry and a strong presence in the red zone (19 touchdowns in two seasons). As a receiver, he caught 54 passes, turning 23 of them into first downs.

Pittsburgh probably isn't looking to Tolbert to carry the running game. He's a complementary back who only had four games with double-digit carries last season.

The Steelers should get a good price on Tolbert, who hasn't received much interest in free agency. He had a visit with the Chiefs, who signed [URL="http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/11461/peyton-hillis"]Peyton Hillis[/URL]. It doesn't look like he'll be going back to the Chargers, who went with [URL="http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10580/le'ron-mcclain"]Le'Ron McClain[/URL]. Those two former AFC North runners could now push Tolbert to the Steelers, who would get much stronger because of it.

In my opinion if we sign Tolbert, either Dwyer or Clay is gone.

I think Clay showed more than Dwyer when given the chance. I would prefer to keep him over Dwyer if we bring in someone else

Tolbert is a SCRUB, pure and simple. I'm assuming he brings certain redeeming qualities, that he continued to get significant playing time in SD. But he was vastly overrated, if you go by what announcers would routinely try and make him out to be. He is NOT a "battering ram" or anything of the sort. He went down on any significant contact--his legs stop on contact. Basically, that fact negates the size that makes him seem so powerful.

I would say he is a decent backup/role player at best, and if he is paid as such, I guess I'd have no problem with him.

What was wrong with that particular quote? The author mentioned the Steelers' OLD rugged persona on offense, and the Steelers' RECENT pass-first philosophy. Sounds about right to me.

I considered "the Steelers' recent pass-first philosophy" to refer to this era of Steeler football (the SBXL-SBXLIII era), and "the Steelers' old rugged persona" to refer to the Steeler dynasties of the 70's. But that's just me.

They just gave DeAngelo Williams huge money last year, and still have Jonathan Stewart on the roster as well. I believe that Stewart's rookie contract is up after this season, so this move will likely guarantee that he won't be extended beyond that, and they'll go forward with a Williams-Tolbert duo at RB. I wonder if they put the Daily Show on the trade block now? Looks like he's due to make $1.3M this season...if he wouldn't cost much in draft pick compensation, I wonder if we might be willing to pull off a trade for Daily Show...both him and Mendenhall would be in the last year of their rookie deals...let them play it out, and then decide which one to sign long-term.
