Omar Khan to interview with Rams

RT "@jthom1: #Steelers Omar Khan expected to interview w/Rams Thursday.”
This could be the biggest loss the Steelers face this off season if he gets hired. He is pretty much known as the cap guru for the Steelers.
    Here comes the BOOM!

Re: Omar Khan to interview with Rams

He interviewed with the Seahawks two years ago, then came back to the Steelers.

It could be a situation like Keith Butler's, where he wants to stay, and we give him some extra cabbage to do so.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Is he really that important? Can't just about any smart guy figure out the cap math?

Is he doing something different than the other 31 teams?

Rams seek permission to interview Omar Khan for G.M. job
Posted by Mike Florio on February 8, 2012, 8:50 PM EST

The Rams continue to look for a new G.M. And they’ve now set their sites on a guy who almost became the G.M. of the Seahawks.

According to Scott Brown of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review and Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Rams have requested permission to interview Steelers director of business and administration Omar Khan. In St. Louis, Khan would be paired with new coach Jeff Fisher (pictured).

Khan has long been linked to former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, with a widespread belief in league circles that if/when Cowher returns to coaching, his first call will be to Khan.

The question of whether Khan goes to the Rams could depend on whether the Rams give Khan final say over the roster. If Khan isn’t getting final say (at least in writing, Parcells/Ireland-style), the Steelers could block the move.

Good luck getting final say over Jeff Fisher's roster.

Rams interested in Steelers exec as general manager
                By Scott Brown, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
                Wednesday, February 8, 2012

The St. Louis Rams have requested permission to interview Steelers director of administration Omar Khan for their general manager job, sources told the Tribune-Review today.

Khan, the Steelers' salary cap manager and chief negotiator, is considered one of the top young executives in the NFL. A key behind-the-scenes figure with the Steelers, Khan was one of two finalists for the Seattle Seahawks' general manager job two years ago.

Khan, who has been with the Steelers since 2000, also has been linked as a possible general manager to join Bill Cowher if the former Steelers coach comes out of retirement.

Khan, 35, has built a reputation of having superior command of the salary cap, and he did some of his best work in 2011. Despite an abbreviated offseason because of the lockout, Khan signed linebackers LaMarr Woodley and Lawrence Timmons, strong safety Troy Polamalu, cornerback Ike Taylor and offensive tackle Willie Colon to long-term contracts while managing to get the Steelers under the salary cap of 120.375 million.

The Steelers had been close to $15 million over the cap when the lockout ended in late July.

pretty damn impressive resume for a man of his age. Didn't realize he was that young.

hope we can keep him in the fold.

                      Khan may be gone?

No biggie. He was a questionable hire from the start, since he never played college or pro football.

Yes he is good. But is he really THAT GOOD! I mean look at the Ravens. They are about 10-15 mil under the cap, and won the north this season. And they are not going anywhere for a while. The Steelers are 25 mil over, and need to make serious cuts/decisions...

Re: Omar Khan to interview with Rams

According to Len Pasquarelli in his Yahoo Friday Tip Sheet, the Steelers already have Khan's replacement waiting in the wings:

STEELERS WON'T BE CAUGHT NAPPING: There are a lot of things to generally admire about the Pittsburgh Steelers, not the least of which is their usual preparedness, on and off the field. It was reported early this week that the St. Louis Rams have requested permission to interview Steelers director of business and administration Omar Khan for their general manager job. One of the NFL's premier salary cap experts, the departure of Khan would be a big loss for the Steelers, but not as significant as it would be if Pittsburgh didn't have a ready replacement already onboard.

Buried in the small type of the Steelers' front office/executives roster is veteran cap specialist Dan Ferens, who works for Pittsburgh in "business administration," and who essentially has been a cap consultant for the past several seasons. Ferens previously worked nearly 20 years for the Steelers, principally managing the cap, before exiting for a corporate gig at IMG in 1999, and then moving on to the Houston Texans as their chief negotiator in 2001.

Ferens resigned from the Texans in 2006 to be closer to his native Western Pennsylvania, then rejoined the Steelers a year later. If Khan leaves, Ferens would almost certainly be the choice as the club's new cap manager, and things would be in good hands, indeed.
