Devaluation of the term "Pro Bowler"

You hear these comments all of the time when discussing HOF type players...

"The guy was a ten time pro bowler" or insert number here. The problem with that is that now everyone can eventually make the PB. Part of that is because the PB is now played prior to the SB and any PBers who are on a SB team can't go and revel in the honor that they have earned.

What happens if the 49ers and Pats make it to the SB? That eliminates 16 players from playing in the PB and now adds 16 2011 PBers to a team that they did not earn entry onto.

Now take it a step further and consider that Ben will not play due to his injuries (among others) and players like Brady who often choose to skip the game. So the 2011 AFC PB QB class will include Philip Rivers - who did not deserve to make it in the first place, Andy Dalton - who did, and who? Tebow? Fitzpatrick? Flacco? None of whom are deserving of being called a PB QB. Let that happen a few more times and could you imagine upon retirement hearing about 6 time PBer Joe Flacco? Tim Tebow?

    To give you some perspective:

Joe Theismann - 2 time PBer
Ken Anderson - 4 time PBer
Ken Stabler - 4 time PBer
Dan Fouts - 6 time PBer

None of the above mentioned deserves to be mentioned with these QBs. The honor has certainly lost some significance. Put the game back on after the SB at least.....

You make a very good point. Goodell has figured out how to make money, but cheapen the experiences. He needs to go, then we can talk Pro Bowl dates.

Tim Tebow getting a mention this year is a sad statement about state of affairs in the NFL. He is a horrible QB.

Excellent post .. and so true. It's always been bad when you have a Ray Lewis and a Champ Bailey making it on past reputation but now with all the alternates it has lost it's meaning.
As many on this site think ... The Rooney's suck, Colbert sucks, Tomlin sucks, the coaches suck, and the players suck.

          but Go Steelers!!!

Being a PB has never been as important, to me, as wins and championships. It's more of a sidenote in my book. Popularity is overrated.

I agree that it ranks way down there, but when careers are looked at in retrospect, that is one of the criteria mentioned.

Can you imagine the discussion ten years from now and somebody pulls out the argument "sure he never sniffed a Super Bowl, but Joe Flacco was a three time pro bowler. Not his fault that the rest of his team couldn't pull their weight."
