    Turnovers

Can we start to get some?

    We've gotten 3.

We've given up the ball 13 times.

    WTF is happening.

A lot of our turnovers were in one bad game.

But more troubling is we can't seem to take the ball away from our opponents.

It's even more remarkable that we are able to get to 6-2 without the benefit of turnovers. Often times, teams get good records because of lucky turnovers at opportune times. However, when the ball doesn't bounce their way and they don't win the turnover battle decisively, they lose. We are somehow able to still win even without taking the ball away. How good will this team be if they start taking the ball away from opponents and not coughing it up?
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Turnovers lost the SB for the Steelers...

If both teams are at 0 turnovers in a game, I will take the Steelers every time...

        with RuthlessBurgher and Slapstick....

We have forced 3 turnovers and given away 13........ We are 6-2...... The -10 ratio will not fly from here on out. This team is entering the 3rd quarter of the season and are in a great position to really take control of there own destiny in the AFC and they have yet to play there best football of the season thus far.

I look at week 9 as a start of another season if you will being that it marks the end of the first 8 and the beginning of the second 8.....

Regardless of stats... there is really only one that MATTERS in the end... and that's the W's and L's....

Lets go get it done Sunday night boys !!!

        LETS GO STEELERS !!!!!

          Turnovers the key for Steelers

          By F. Dale Lolley
          11/4/2011

PITTSBURGH - With their attacking, zone-blitz defense, the Steelers are accustomed to putting together record-setting performances.

This season, however, the Steelers' defense has set a record of a different kind.

No team in NFL history has forced fewer than the three turnovers the Steelers have recorded in their first eight games. In fact, no team in league history has ever gone through an eight-game stretch and forced just three turnovers.

Despite that, the Steelers have found other ways to win, managing a 6-2 start.

"When you've got all phases of the ball clicking, who cares about turnovers, truthfully?" said Steelers defensive end Ziggy Hood. "If they are there, it's a blessing. If they're not, you do your job, keep them out of the end zone and allow our offense to get on the field and score."

Yet winning the turnover battle is an important part of any football game and the Steelers are a league-worst minus-10 in turnover ratio.

More than half of Pittsburgh's 13 turnovers came in a season-opening 35-7 loss at Baltimore Sept. 11, as quarterback Ben Roethlisberger threw three interceptions and the Steelers lost four fumbles, including two by Roethlisberger.

The Steelers will get an opportunity to return the favor on the Ravens (5-2) when they host Baltimore Sunday night at Heinz Field.

Pittsburgh knows it can't lose the turnover battle so decisively again if it hopes to beat the Ravens.

"A lot of those go on me," said Roethlisberger, who has accounted for just six turnovers (four interceptions, three lost fumbles) since that game in Baltimore.

"I have to be better with (the ball)."

Doing that against Baltimore is sometimes easier said than done.

Bolstered by its effort against the Steelers, the Ravens are tied for second in the NFL with 16 forced turnovers.

"They are slaying people and we are a part of that," said Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin. "We contributed six or seven of those turnovers to that tally. They are playing extremely fast, they are really talented, they know what they are doing and they are very rarely out of place."

The Steelers hope they can say the same thing this week about their defense, which could be bolstered by the return of linebackers James Harrison and James Farrior.

Harrison will have tests done today to determine if he can play for the first time in over a month after suffering a broken orbital bone, while Farrior is pushing toward a return after sitting out last week's 25-17 win over New England with a strained calf.

Their return could be much needed for a defense that will likely be without linebacker LaMarr Woodley, who was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Month for October after recording 7 1/2 sacks last month. Woodley strained his hamstring against the Patriots.

Regardless of who is in the lineup, an offense that has turned the ball over just six times since the opener wants to continue that trend.

"You're not going to beat many teams turning the ball over seven times, and you're certainly not going to beat a team as good as Baltimore turning it over that many times," said Steelers tight end Heath Miller. "We knew that before the game and we proved that. That should be a pretty good goal for us, not to turn it over this time."

          Odds and end zones

Steelers wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders will not play against Baltimore. Sanders has been dealing with the death of his mother earlier this week and has not practiced. ... Offensive tackle Jonathan Scott (ankle) and wide receiver Hines Ward (ankle) were limited in practice Thursday. Ward, however, has vowed to play.

I was thinking the same thing. But we did commit 7 turnovers in one loss with no takeaways, which you can kind of count as an aberration. So we are sitting at 6-1 on a -3 differential, which is indicative of a team that can really control LOS.

The other deal here is that with the #1 pass D, we are getting lots of 3 and outs, which limits the TO opportunities.

Steelers looking at record low for takeaways

              By Mark Kaboly, PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW
              Thursday, November 10, 2011

The Steelers are on pace for the lowest number of takeaways in NFL history. They have only four through nine games — two interceptions and two fumble recoveries. However, the Steelers are still the third-ranked defense in the NFL.

"Great defenses make people turn the ball over," nose tackle Casey Hampton said. "We haven't been doing a good job of that, but it is coming."

Under defensive coordinator D!ck LeBeau's watch since he returned in 2004, the Steelers have never had fewer than 22 turnovers in a season (2009). Their most came in 2004, when they had 19 interceptions and 13 fumbles.

              >> If James Harrison appeared like he didn't miss any time away from the field when he sacked Baltimore's Joe Flacco three times Sunday, there's a reason. Harrison spent every Monday working out with strength coach Garrett Giemont simulating plays on the practice field.

"We did a series of plays whatever the situation was in the game, we would do 60 or 70 plays or so and try to keep up what conditioning I had," Harrison said.

Harrison said that his surgically repaired orbital bone that kept him on the sidelines for four games swelled up a little following the game, but that was expected.

"No pain and no other issues," Harrison said.

              >> Receivers Arnaz Battle (hamstring), Jerricho Cotchery (knee) and Emmanuel Sanders (knee), linebackers Stevenson Sylvester (knee) and LaMarr Woodley (hamstring) and safety Troy Polamalu (rib) did not practice yesterday. Receiver Hines Ward (concussion-like symptoms), guard Doug Legursky (toe) and linebacker James Farrior (calf) fully participated.

              >> The Steelers claimed defensive end Al Woods off waivers from Seattle and released linebacker Mortty Ivy. Woods was drafted in the fourth round by New Orleans in 2010 and spent time on the Steelers practice squad last year. Woods played in two games for the Seahawks and recorded two tackles.

I think things like this even out over a whole season. I see us getting 15 - 18 turnovers in the last 7 games. We will be getting Woodley back and together with Harrison being healthy they are going to start wreaking havoc.

I think you'll get more consistency from him than you did with Kemo.

I'd like to have a blowout game in which the Steelers put Kemo in as a lead blocker out of the backfield. His strength is on the move as a search and destroy blocker.

But then, he'd have to "learn" a new position.
