Why does the OL only block when Redman or Moore are in?

    SUNDAY, 23 OCTOBER 2011

    WRITTEN BY ED BOUCHETTE

The Steelers' Mewelde Moore stiff-arms the Cardianls' A.J. Jefferson in the fourth quarter.

    - Rashard Mendenhall was the fifth-best back on the field behind Isaac Redman, Mewelde Moore and the two from Arizona. He had 32 yards on 13 carries, one of the big negatives from the game. It's as if last week never happened when he ran for 146 yards againt Jacksonville.

Here are Mendy's totals the other three games around his 146: 37 on 18 carries, 25 on 9 carries, 32 on 13 carries. That's not a big-time back. Either the offensive line only blocks when Redman or Moore are in there or Mendy isn't the back for this offense.

Thats an easy one: Mendy isn't the back for this offense. He needs a better line to support his run style and he won't see it any time soon. If we could trade him for a solid pick, and toss Arians and DJ the "fullback" to the curb, the offense could only get better.

Well, the board guru said it was Ben's fault. Put BAtch in at QB and the holes will open up for Spindenhall, right?

Maybe Mendenhall isn't the RB for this offense ...

BUT maybe Mendenhall/Redman/and Moore TOGETHER are the best running backs (plural) for this offense?

I don't think Redman and Moore can be do it themselves ... but maybe all 3 together are a decent enough package?

We got our "6-PACK" - time to work on a CASE!

I've been saying it all year.... Redman is the better RB for this offense. BA would be a genius overnight and Ben would put up sick numbers if Redman was the primary back. One the last drive AZ knew Redman was getting the ball and he still had 12 yards on first down.

Redman has a Bettis style, not fast but quick in the hole and always moving forward. I was a big Mendenhall fan before Redman showed up and it's obvious to everyone but BA and Tomlin who should get the start.

Redman/Moore/Dwyer and Batch next year is more than enough.

-- Don't mean to pick on Rashard Mendenhall, but where's the beef? The Steelers need a consistently good running back, not someone who will flash 146 one day and 37 the next. He's a first-round pick. He has one year left on his contract after this one but the way he's running, they won't run to sign him to a contract extension after this season.

Something has definitely happened to Mendenhall. He is suffering badly from FWP disease. The guy is tentative, unsure, and lacking any power. His only effective runs yesterday were sweeps.
He either has awful vision in picking the creases, or he just has been unable to make that first man miss. Bettis used to preach that the first man on a RB is the RB's responsibility. I just don't see that happening for Mendenhall.
I wouldn't mind seeing if we could get some trade value at the end of the season. His style is definitely replaceable.
