Coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday there were some encouraging signs that the Steelers are progressing in several areas.
He was most pleased with the performance of the special teams. Antonio Brown returned four points for 67 yards, including a 37-yarder.
"I saw some exciting things in special teams," Tomlin said. "The important thing is we're able to win games as we go through this process. It doesn't mean the quality of our performance last week will produce anything this week."
» Tomlin called Houston "a quality outfit," with quality players at most every position. But he reserved special praise for wide receiver Andre Johnson.
"I have a great deal of respect for him. When you talk about defending him, you talk about containing him, not stopping him," Tomlin said. "If they are committed, and I know that they will be, they will get the ball in his hands, using a myriad of formations, shifts and motions."
» Despite boasting a balanced offense, the Texans have been subpar inside the red zone. They have converted only 5 of 16 opportunities inside the 20-yard line. The Texans, though, are expected to have running back Arian Foster back in the starting lineup Sunday. Foster has only 10 carries this season because of injury, while his backup Ben Tate has accounted for 301 yards.
» The Texans released former West Virginia running back Steve Slaton on Tuesday. The 5-foot-9, 209-pound Slaton was a third-round pick in 2008 and was the NFL's top rookie rusher with 1,282 yards. He rushed for 437 yards but fumbled seven times in 2009 and was placed on injured reserve after 11 games. He had neck surgery after the season, and never regained his form.
» The Steelers committed three turnovers against the Colts, a disturbing fact for Tomlin. Even more troublesome, they have a minus-9 turnover ratio.
"We are not doing a good enough job of protecting the ball, and we are not doing a good enough job of getting it," Tomlin said. "Those two things together make you extremely uncomfortable. We have to be near the bottom of the NFL, if not the worst, (in turnover ratio)."
Houston has a plus-2 turnover ratio.
» The Steelers took a long look at running back James Casey during the draft. Instead, the Texans selected the versatile standout from Rice.
"They ask him to do a lot of things," Tomlin said. "He's a tight end-like guy and a fullback-like guy."
