I just figure it's his second game as a starter and he is working next to a rookie. Your right though, he probably doesn't deserve the pass.

What gets me the Steelers/coaches messed around with Hill for so long and he is no longer on the team and the guy that replaced him or even the backups are so under par that, it is obvious this team does not hold in high regards that offensive linemen are of value. Or they just don't know what to look for in an offensive lineman. Maybe a little of both.

I agree. Seattle's DL is actually pretty good.

He has a lot of assignments to learn and was probably over thinking a bit.

It's one thing to miss a block, an assignment or not know where your blitz pick ups are supposed to be. It is completely different to not show leg drive in the run game, finish a block, and show inadequate lateral ability. The bottom line is the guy lacks attitude and want to....half of what makes up a successful lineman. Yes he is a rookie ....and if he doesn't develop some toughness and agrees ion he won't see a second NFL contract.

                      Gilbert's first start

A new starter on the OL was rookie Marcus Gilbert, who replaced Willie Colon at right tackle. Colon tore his triceps in the season-opening loss in Baltimore and will not play again this season.

Gilbert, the team's second-round draft pick who showed up for training camp overweight, missed an assignment on the opening series that led to a Roethlisberger sack on second-and-goal at the Seattle 1, but rebounded for a solid debut.

Gilbert said he settled down after the first series.

"I was too pumped up," said the 6-foot-6, 330-pounder from the University of Florida. "I couldn't believe I was out there running with the 'ones'. It was the best feeling ever. To get my first start in the second game of the season as a rookie ... it went pretty well."

Tight end Heath Miller, who lines up next to Gilbert on many plays, was impressed.

"To step in the second game as a rookie, I thought he played great," Miller said. "Obviously, the tape will tell the story, but it seemed like we didn't miss a beat with him in there."

                        Re: Gilberts first half performance...

It was an uneven performance at best. But, he is a rookie. So far, I like him as a LT better. I agree with SKL that his leg drive is weak right now. But, he was playing against a strong DE for much of the night. That LDE was huge. I disagree that he doesn't possess enough lateral agility to play tackle. I think he does and he has a huge frame and decent athleticism to help steer pass rushers past the QB. I don't know if he'll make it or not. But, one silver lining to Colon's injury is that we will know if Gilbert is NFL material by the end of the season.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

Yep!! Eddie you hit the nail right on the head. SKL has to justify his criticism of Gilbert.

I think Gilbert was pretty good yesterday. You can't expect an O-lineman to sustain his block for 5, 6, or 7 seconds all the time. What I saw of him in his initial set-up was impressive. Gilbert has quick feet and I believe he is already the best pass blocking tackle the Steelers have. He has the potential to be a better than average tackle. Give him some time.

SKL, everyone knew that run blocking wasnt Gilbert's strength...especially the Steelers brass. He was drafted because of his ability to pass block...which has been a huge Achilles heal for this team the past several years. It was widely known that Gilbert would need to get stronger for run blocking. However the Steelers saw enough in his ability to pass block to take that risk. So far I see it is paying off.

I don't know what game that you watched. In the one that I watched, Gilbert did just fine, and the coach agrees with me.

                              Re: Marcus Gilbert’s play:
[Tomlin] It was above-the-line, a winning effort. I thought we had some movement there in the first half, running the football on his side. I thought we could have run the ball better in the second half. We all bear the responsibility for that.

I knew this was coming. If I say the sky is blue you say no it's not. Gilbert's strength actually is his run blocking, the guy didn't get moved to tackle till his senior year. Having said that he isn't very good at either. He will get abused by a team with any creative blitz packages. I would even say that Wade Philips will have the Texans giving him fits. Don't be surprised if Ben gets his neck broken.
