    It's Official--the NFL is a passing league

Heard on a couple different media outlets that the teams passed for over 7800 yards on the opening weekend of games. This is an all time record for a single weekend of play...and no Peyton Manning or Carson Palmer.

Simple truth is: pass or lose!!!!! Make your choice.

I guess it isn't just the Steelers that can't stop the pass then, right?

Re: It's Official--the NFL is a passing league

Tom Brady passed for a league-leading 517 yards in a Monday night win, but what about the other top 5 passers from this weekend? Newton (422 yards), Brees (419), Henne (416), and Romo (342) all lost. Pass or lose, eh?
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

The NFL has changed the rules in favor of the O. This is why we need a new O coordinator. If you cannot keep pace and out score your opponent you will lose. The D matters but not as much as it used to because of all the rules changes. Score and score often because your opponent will do the same.

The Steelers need to shore up the O-line and get a better offensive coordinator. Not too difficult is it?

Good point. It does seem like the league is trying to make every game decided in the last few minutes of every game like an NBA game. Not sure if that's a good thing?

Meanwhile, 6 guys ran for greater than 100 yards during week 1 (McFadden 150, McCoy 122, Benson 121, Tate 116, Jackson 112, and Rice 107). All of their teams won.

Brilliant deduction, Holmes. Did you just figure that out on your own?

Meanwhile, people have been saying that for years. Get with the program.

Why were these ignored? Is it just simpler to ignore a complete and utter refutation of your point than it is to debate?

Re: It's Official--the NFL is a passing league

I may be wrong but in past seasons wasn't it the offense that started out rusty and the defense that was ahead of them in the opener (statistically speaking).

Get used to Goodell Arena football

He has castrated defenses to the point that it's no longer matters.

But hey he is catering the Madden generation...(I apologize for those who are Madden lover that like defense )

Chicks dig the Touchdown not the sack.

This is not my opinion Goodell is catering to the least common denominator, not the true fan.

There was nothing clever about it...

The league produced nearly 8000 passing yards over the course of the weekend, but half of the league's teams still lost...

So, it seems to be pass and lose...

Don't speak that way about Ruthless's post! It is very "clever," and it has a great personality. His post was ignored too long, and now, I want to start a life with it. I'm taking it home to meet my Mom this weekend.

(hopefully, by now, my "tongue and cheek" response is starting to come across. That sort of thing never plays well on the inter web. Point is, I agree with Ruthless, but I can't help myself sometimes with taking things lightly. It is how I roll.)

The premise of it’s a passing league is certainly true and has been for many years. It’s tough to make a blanket statement though such as “pass or lose” but I don’t think it’s completely irrelevant. Looking at the top 5 guys as Ruthless mentioned:

#2 Newton - he played against a QB who threw for 309 yards (Kolb)
#3 Brees – he also played against a QB who threw for over 300 (Rodgers – 312)
#4 Henne – he threw for 416, with 3 td’s (2 passing, 1 running) but ran into the buzz saw known as Brady
                              # 5 Romo – Sanchez threw for 335

They lost but they all lost to other guys having huge passing days.

I think it’s better to say you need to be able to throw and possibly throw for tons of yardage if you are going to compete. Obviously this isn’t true every single game but it’s a decent rule of thumb. The top 14 passers this week threw over 300 including names like Orton and Grossman.

An example as the concern as it relates to the Steelers is Green Bay abandoning the run, not even pretending to try and still throwing over 300 yards (and it could have been worse without the GB drops).
