While rookie free agent safety Brett Greenwood must have been devastated by the Steelers decision to release him last week, he’s now facing something much more serious -- his health.

As the Quad City Times reports, the former University of Iowa star collapsed while working out at Pleasant Valley (Iowa) High School on Friday and suffered an apparent heart attack.

He was rushed to Trinity Bettendorf hospital where he was placed on a ventilator, was listed in critical condition, and then was transferred to University Hospitals in Iowa City.

GreenwoodAs the newspaper recounts, Greenwood asked Pleasant Valley officials if he could work out on the field before his alma mater played a varsity game against Davenport West. Athletic director Randy Teymar gave his permission, and after Greenwood attracted a crowd of admiring onlookers, he collapsed on the turf. Team trainer Jason Viel was the first to reach him.

"Basically, his heart stopped,” Viel told the paper. “I know that."

Said Pleasant Valley coach Rusty VanWetzinga, who spoke to Greenwood earlier where they were talking “talking about football, talking about life, talking about how he wants to stay in sports.

"He was going to come down around the sideline tonight and be around us. The kids love him around here. His name echoes through the hallways of Pleasant Valley. I had seen him down there running and I thought he was busy, then I thought I better go down there and say hi to him. I'm sure glad I did because of, you know, whatever happened.

"He's a great, great kid, his parents are great people and the world is a better place with Brett here."

Greenwood was a walk-on at Iowa, but he was good enough to start 29-straight games for the Hawkeyes.

Wow...get well soon, kid. Get well soon.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Wow! That young, and he has a Heart Attack ? I can only imagine he must have some sort of condition involving his heart. I wonder why such condition wasn't spotted on his initial physical with the steelers ? I hear those physicals are pretty In-depth. I certainly wish the kid well, and hopefully they can fix whatever is wrong with his heart. And he lives a LONG life!

                    By DON DOXSIE,

AMES --- The Iowa football team returned to the scene of perhaps the best game of Brett Greenwood's college career Saturday.

And Greenwood again was on their minds, albeit for much different reasons this time.

The former Pleasant Valley athlete, who started at free safety for the Hawkeyes the past four seasons, collapsed with an apparent heart condition while working out at his old high school Friday afternoon. He remained hospitalized at University Hospital in Iowa City on Saturday.

The hospital declined to give information on his condition, but his former high school coach, Ed Morrissey, said Greenwood was in an induced coma.

Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz told his players about Greenwood after they arrived in Ames on Friday night and a few of them admitted it wasn't easy to play a game Saturday without lingering thoughts about their former teammate.

"You've just got to go out there and play," said junior Micah Hyde, who has stepped into Greenwood's free safety job this season. "The coach told us last night to let us know. He didn't want us to think about it the whole game."

Sophomore linebacker James Morris said the players were somewhat stunned to learn that Greenwood, who will turn 24 Wednesday, was hospitalized and possibly fighting for his life.

"We were scared and obviously concerned for him," Morris said. "Anytime that happens to someone who is part of your family you feel that way. Here we are in Ames and kind of helpless to do anything. He's in our thoughts and prayers."

Greenwood, whose father Dave played at Iowa State, played arguably his best game two years ago when the Hawkeyes defeated Iowa State 35-3 in Ames. He had two of his 12 career interceptions in that game.

"The smartest football player I've ever played with," Hyde said. "He was in the film room 24/7. It's unfortunate this had to happen to him. He's a tough guy mentally and physically and hopefully he'll bounce back."

Ferentz simply said: "We're just all keeping Brett and his family in our thoughts."

                    EARLIER STORY

Former University of Iowa and Pleasant Valley High School football star Brett Greenwood collapsed while working out Friday and is in intensive care at Trinity Bettendorf.

Trinity officials said Greenwood is in critical condition and will be transported to University Hospitals in Iowa City.

PV athletic director Randy Teymer confirmed that Greenwood was undergoing a workout at the high school's field Friday when he collapsed at about 3 p.m. PV medical personnel administered to him before he was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

Teymer said he thought Greenwood was on a ventilator in intensive care.

Greenwood, 23, was a four-year starter at Iowa and was named second-team All-Big Ten each of the past two years. He signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Steelers, but was released in the final round of NFL cuts last weekend.
