Roethlisberger, Steelers believe offense is primed for breakout year

http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/re ... story.html

By Associated Press, Thursday, September 8, 11:13 AM

PITTSBURGH — No matter how many touchdowns he scores, Super Bowl rings he wins or carefully choreographed end zone celebrations the “Dancing With the Stars” champion executes to perfection, Pittsburgh wide receiver Hines Ward knows his team’s identity will never change.

For proof, the 14-year veteran points to the portrait-lined wall of the Steelers’ offices.
“All you see is the defensive guys, offensive linemen, running backs,” Ward said. “There’s no room for wideouts. There’s only two quarterbacks in this franchise that you can name and that’s Ben (Roethlisberger) and Terry Bradshaw. It is what it is here.”

For decades it’s been defense. It’s been some burly running back — from Franco Harris to Barry Foster to Jerome Bettis — blowing through linebackers. It’s been blue collar.

And maybe, just maybe, it’s about to change.

The defending AFC champions open the season on Sunday against rival Baltimore with perhaps the most dynamic offense during Ward’s lengthy career. The 29-year-old Roethlisberger is just entering the prime of a career. Third-year wide receiver Mike Wallace is coming off a breakout season and running back Rashard Mendenhall thinks he can improve on the 13 touchdowns he scored a year ago.

Throw in speedster Antonio Brown’s eye-opening preseason (three touchdowns while averaging 25.6 yards per catch) plus the addition of former New York Jet Jerricho Cotchery and Roethlisberger understands why there’s a buzz surrounding a unit that ranked a modest 12th in points and 14th in yards a year ago.

Still, asked if this is arguably the most talent he’s ever had at his disposal and he’s typically diplomatic.

“I guess whenever you say something like that, you have to put a little asterisk by it, because you’ve got to say ‘arguably,’” Roethlisberger said. “But they’re a good group and they are very young, so they still make their fair share of mistakes. But, they’re learning and growing and they want to be great.”

And they want be great now.

Wallace predicted on the opening day of training camp he wanted to put together the first 2,000-yard season by a receiver in league history. He’s not backing down from the goal, but thinks it may be harder to come by only because there’s only one ball to go around and too many options at Roethlisberger’s disposal.

Then again, that’s probably a good thing.

“It might make it easier because I might have a lot of one-on-one coverage,” Wallace said.

Highly unlikely for a player that averaged 21.0 yards a catch in 2010. Wallace will almost certainly have plenty of company as he roams through the Baltimore secondary on Sunday.

Even if he does, Roethlisberger has such confidence in Wallace he might take a chance anyway, the product of a relationship that’s flourished.

“When I was a rookie, I don’t think he was like my homeboy. But now, we’re close,” Wallace said. “Now, I can tell him whatever I want and he’s not going to take it a certain way.”

Call it part of Roethlisberger’s continuing maturation. Entering his eighth year, Roethlisberger has such a command of the system, offensive coordinator Bruce Arians believes his quarterback could call an entire game with ease.

I say, give him that chance! I'd love to see what a Ben-called game would produce.

If you watched the Packers/Saints you saw the types of teams and offenses that we need to beat to win a Super Bowl. Both those teams take full advanatage of the rules that are in place and favor the offense. That is why it is incomprehensible that we still have some that think you can win a championship in this league with a power running game.

You won't beat the Packers, Saints or Patriots running the ball. You need to match them score for score and for all the criticism Arians get he should get credit in transitioning our offense to one that has a chance to do that.

I hope to see our offense this season look more like what we saw last night in the Packers/Saints game and less like the Ravens' offense. Spread them out baby

You need ballance. You need to be able to air it out, but you always want to be able to grind out a win (protect a lead, shorten the game).

I think our O this year should have success on both counts.

IF the Saints could have run the ball they would have WON the game.. 3 and inches, hit for a loss, 4th and a Foot and they try to throw it.. then they Died down 8 at the goal line.. unable to run it in..

I totally agree! "Smashmouth" You gotta to run the football to win, mentality RIP!! What we saw opening night is what the NFL is right now. Who can outscore who. I will almost guarantee you there will be no power running, run first teams representing in the superbowl....There is practically no defense for these teams who have elite QB's and a bunch of to throw to. Like the poster above me said it, you have to match these teams offensively and eventually one of the defenses will make a stand when it counts, ala the GB goal line stand.

I honestly believe we DO have the offensive fire power to keep up with teams like GB, NO, Indy, NE, SD etc. I love our current offensive personel over anybodys. If we're not putting up 30 points a game this year, then there is indeed a problem.

Who are these phantom people saying that we need a power running game to win a championship?
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I believe the Steelers have the weapons to produce offensively. I am not certain they have the QB to execute and produce consistently. For the offense to score on those team's level, Ben will need to play with more consistency.

Please God, let this happen.

I'll give Arians a little credit...he's slowly started to abandon some of his horrible tendencies (such as no 3-step drops, no fullback, incorporating the no-huddle, bone-headed formations, and retarded play-calling), and turn more of the offense over to Ben.

I was a little disappointed last season that he did not go more no-huddle (and build on what we did in 2009), but with the youth at WR and Ben's suspension, I'll give him a pass. This season I really hope Ben is calling more plays and pushing the tempo more frquently. We will look like Green Bay's offense did on Thursday night...unstoppable.

To me it all comes down to this offensive line.

This team has young, skilled, knowledgeable players at all the skill positions on offense.

Either Mendenhall or Redman could carry the load. Moore is a nice support back.
I have complete confidence in each WR we have. Wallace to Battle.
Miller is king and johnson appears to have turned a corner in his development somewhat.
Really just waiting for the Miller/Saunders show to arrive. Once that happens, oh boy.

So it comes down to Kugler. I don't think what he did last year was a fluke. I think he is that guy. And I'm really on board with Scott-Kemoeatu-Pouncey-Legursky-Colon.

There is a delectable hidden potential in this group. I feel it. Kugler will deliver it.

I didn't say 34-16 Steelers for nothin'!

Go Steelers!!!

The pass is more important than the run, but you need to be able to do BOTH when the need calls for it.

And no BA, running the ball on first down every time is not a way to get our offense to put points on the board.
