Baron Batch carted off field with left knee injury

Steelgal was the first to report this sad news under her "Camp Updates" thread and I don't mean to steal her thunder but I thought this needed its own thread.

let's hope this is only a knee sprain after the results of the MRI are known but numerous sources have said it doesn't look good.

I hope the look on Batch's face doesn't mean what I think it does.

This doesn't look good. Polamalu gives him sympathetic pat on shoulder pads b4 Batch carted off field.

    ScottBrown_Trib Scott Brown
Trainers working on both leg; Ben standing over him too. Its his left knee and Batch can't put any pressure on it.

Uh oh. Baron Batch pulls up after run and waves over trainer

This sucks because he may have been Mendy's relief....It sounded if he was ready to rip up the NFL from a camp stand point, but now he'll probably miss significant time if not the whole season.

My first thought was "that damned turf" they are practicing on ....
Admittedly, I don't really know, but it seems to me there have been more than a couple injuries while they've been practicing on that turf since all the rain hit Latrobe.

        Baron Batch Suffers Knee Injury

        By: Mike Vukovcan
        August 10, 2011

Pittsburgh (KDKA)- Steelers rookie running back Baron Batch has been the talk of camp but today he’s being talked about for the wrong reason.

At the end of practice today, Batch had to be carted off the field with what looked like a serious injury to his left knee.

The injury happened at the end of a long 40-yard run, Batch’s knee just gave out.

Just yesterday, Pat Kirwan from NFL.com called Batch one of the most impressive players in Steelers camp.

This is a tough break for Batch because he was impressing coaches and had a real shot of earning a spot on the 53-man roster.

Head coach Mike Tomlin isn’t speaking today after practice so it might be tough to get an official update on Batch’s condition.

Steelers rookie running back Baron Batch sustained what appears to be a serious knee injury today near the end of practice.

The injury was a non-contact one, and it happened on the turf field the Steelers have been relegated to this week because the regular fields are too wet to practice on. A popping sound could be heard as Batch pulled up liming at the end of a run, and he immediately waved over the Steelers' trainers.

He could not stand on his left leg, and he was carted off the field after quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and strong safety Troy Polamalu offered encouragement to the seventh-round draft pick.

"Field turf, that's why we don't want it at Heinz Field," Roethlisberger said. "It's a dangerous thing. From where we were standing it didn't look like anybody hit him."
Coach Mike Tomlin was not available after practice because he held a news conference this morning.

The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Batch has been one of the stars at training camp, standing out in blocking drills and making decisive cuts when running the ball. Batch's final run today, Roethlisberger said, was typical of the ones he has made during camp.

"He was real, real patient and a very small crease opened up and he got through it quick," Roethlisberger said. "You never like to see anybody go down."

Terrible luck- sounded like he was a good thing to make the roster.

The battle to be the #4 RB just got interesting between Dwyer & Clay. If neither are good enough, there are still some interesting names out there- Kevin Smith, Clinton Portis, Laurence Maroney, James Davis, Correll Buckholter, Mike Bell.......Willie Parker....Tiki Barber....
The people that are trying to make the world worse never take a day off, why should I?

            Light up the darkness.

I think you've hit the nail on the head.

Mewelde Moore will reclaim his job as the 3rd down back while Dwyer and Clay will battle it out for the #4 RB job with the loser either going on the practice squad or getting cut.

"This certainly opens the door last year’s sixth-round pick, Jonathan Dwyer, to make the roster, and could also give undrafted free agent John Clay a longer look in camp, and that’s assuming the Steelers don’t bring in another running back off the waiver wire or in free agency."

They will bring in another RB now. They will keep 4 and one on the PS. They will need at least 6 legit candidates in camp. It could be a vet or another UDFA.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie running back Baron Batch tore his anterior cruciate ligament and is out for the season, he announced on his official blog. "Friday I was supposed to play my first NFL game," Batch wrote. "That won’t happen. Today I tore my ACL. I’m not sure why I’m writing about this right now except for the fact that God put it on my heart to do so. I probably should be devastated at the fact I wont play my rookie season but… I’m not. After my season ending injury my freshman year of college I promised myself that I would never ask God “why?” again and I’m not about to start now. "It’s during the tough times that we are able to grow. I’m excited to hit another growth spurt. I’ve never been so close to something and then have it pulled away. I felt like my NFL career was within grasp, I could feel it on my fingertips only to have it pulled away and postponed. As I was being carted off the field today I could clearly hear my mothers voice whispering, “Have faith son, have faith.” The 5-foot-10, 207-pound former Texas Tech player rushed for 2,501 career yards, including 816 yards as a senior.

I would have liked Jerome Harrison. Detroit signed both of them (who were traded for each other in a rare in-season player-for-player swap at the same position last year, interestingly enough) went they lost rookie RB Mikel LeShoure to a torn Achilles (I.R.).
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

His writing about the whole thing was impressive, IMO. He's very mature and I really hope that the Steelers will get to work with him someday soon even if this season is over for him.
