Redskins, Steelers had draft deal, but guy was gone at #16

Skins, Steelers had draft deal, but guy was gone

    May 14, 2011
    by Will Brinson

The 2011 NFL Draft has come and gone, but here's an interesting little nugget about something that could have happened, involving a Redskins-Steelers trade for the No. 16 overall pick.

Per Jim Wexell of Steel City Insider, Dan Snyder, appearing on Sirius Radio this past week, said that Washington and Pittsburgh had a deal in place for the No. 16 overall pick, but "the player was gone."

As you probably recall, the Redskins traded down from 10th to 16th via a deal with Jacksonville where the Jaguars picked up Blaine Gabbert.

The logical guess is that the Steelers wanted Mike Pouncey, brother of their center, Maurkice Pouncey. Can we be sure though?

Well, not positive, but pretty close. Hopping in the not-so-way-back machine and taking a look at our Draft Tracker, we can pretty much reach that conclusion.

We have to make the assumption that the player in question was taken in between the 11th and 15th picks, as Washington had access to both the 10th and 16th picks and Pittsburgh didn't make a move.

Scratching the one quarterback taken in that range, Gabbert and Christian Ponder, off the list isn't a reach, considering that the Steelers still have Ben Roethlisberger.

J.J. Watt and Robert Quinn were both strong picks, but it seems unlikely that Pittsburgh would trade valuable assets for a defensive end in a year when there was depth at the position. Additionally, Cameron Heyward -- the guy they got -- fits their scheme nicely.

Nick Fairley could have been under consideration, as he would have represented outstanding value, but, I'm not so sure that what he does best would necessarily equate to making him the long-term answer at DT for Pittsburgh, assuming they don't make a scheme shift once (if??) D!ck LeBeau retires.

And then there's this: many people thought the Dolphins would take Alabama running back Mark Ingram, but went with Pouncey right before the 'Skins 16th pick instead. So it seemed like Pouncey might be there at 16; clearly the Steelers are fans of that family, and wouldn't need to play him at center, as many teams felt they might.

And with their second-round pick, the Steelers nabbed Pouncey's linemate at Florida, Marcus Gilbert. That's not to say they loved the other Pouncey just because he's related to one of their players, or because he's from the same school.

And it's tough to guarantee that's what they were hoping for, but it sure does seem like a strong possibility.

If the deal was t otrade away picks to move up and take Mike Pouncey then I'm glad he was gone and the deal fell through. while he may have stabilzed the line for a long time with his brother; I'm hoping this year's draft is like last year's with more than one rookie contributing to the success of the Steelers.

I wonder what the Steelers were giving to move up that far.

Had to be for JJ Watt. No way would you trade that far up for an OG.

Maybe I'm blinded by Watt being the one guy I would have traded up to get.

Our OL is not in dire straits, so I too am glad it fell through. With Starks and Colon healthy, we look pretty damn good on OL. Starks, Kemo?, Pouncey, Colon, Adams....Kemo is the weakest link, but not that bad

A-I, too, am glad Pouncey was gone and we didn't make that deal.

B-I don't see Adams back. Almost can't have him back. Might need that 5 mill to sign Ike.

C-Is anyone else a bit perturbed by the fact that we don't open at home on Sept. 11th.
That, to me, is a bit of a slight. Would've been nice to do something for Shanksville.

            just sayin.

We had a solid draft that we would not have had trading away picks for one player. I'm glad this didn't happen.

Pirates are in town that weekend, so it wouldn't of worked. It would of been cool though.

At Washington. That's pretty fair though cause the jets open up the Sunday night

How close was the crash to Philly? Iirc they open at home

Do they really try to not schedule a home game chase the pirates are at home? It's not like they play in the same stadium... Hockey doenst seem to have a problem with Sunday pens games when he steelers are home

It never happens. Each year before the schedule comes, I try to figure out if the Steelers will be on the road or at home the 1st few weeks of the season based on the baseball schedule. I guess it could happen if one of the teams play on a Sunday night & the other team plays at 1pm. But I don't see the Pirates being the lone Sunday night game on ESPN anytime soon (or anynight for that matter). The Jets or Giants at home on Sunday night Week 1 in NYC on the 10 year anniversary of 9/11 makes too much sense.

The Pirates and Steelers, although they play in different stadiums, they share parking on the North Side. The Pens' Consol Center is on the other side of the Allegheny River. I love weekends where there are Pens and Steeler games. I have never seen a Pirates game, though, because they are never in town when the Steelers are home (I'm not a baseball fan at all, but I would like to see a game at PNC eventually, because many folks consider it to be the best place to see a ballgame in America...product on the field not withstanding).
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

the Steelers' first 3 picks were worth 996 points and the Redskins' selection at 1(16) was worth 1000 points. Would Mike Pouncey or JJ Watt have been worth Cameron Heyward, Marcus Gilbert and Curtis Brown?

I believe the answer is YES to both.
