Marvin Lewis thinks Andy Dalton can start right away

I hope so, that should be good for two wins this season...

Marvin Lewis thinks Andy Dalton can start right away

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on May 1, 2011

The next step at quarterback for the Bengals is to decide whether they need another veteran quarterback to pair with Andy Dalton, considering Carson Palmer’s future up in the air.

Coach Marvin Lewis said he was unsure if they would go after anyone in free agency, whenever it arrives.

“I don’t think there’s an exact need. I feel really good about the guy we were able to draft,” Lewis said via the team’s website. “If he ends up being the starter as a rookie, I think he can do that.”

That’s a lot to put on a second round quarterback from TCU, but Dalton sounds confident he can pull it off.

“Everybody says that [Palmer] is not coming back, but I can’t worry about that,” Dalton said. “I just have to come in and learn as much as I can as quickly as I can, and put myself in a position to be successful when I get the opportunity.

“Obviously, everyone knows about the current situation with Carson Palmer. As far as I know, it’s open [competition]. We’re trying to figure out who will be the guy, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Dalton chose the number 14, the same jersey Ken Anderson used to wear. He was introduced with A.J. Green as the Bengals looked to a new era. Green said all the right things, with Lewis calling him a “new breed” of receiver.

“I don’t do reality TV,” Green said.

I've read so many opinions how this guy was the STEAL of the draft, and a great pick by the Bengals,,,but I ain't buying it.Dalton is simpley a Yomans QB. He played on maybe the greatest college team the past 2 years, and had the best defense constantly putting him and the offense in good field position. Hell, I would take the Alabama QB Mcelroy over Dalton any day of the week.

Why Dalton rose in the eyes of so many is beyond me. Cause the TCU success was definitely more due to their defense and ground game.

      FILE IT AWAY

Second-round pick Andy Dalton became the ninth quarterback the Cincinnati Bengals have drafted in the past 20 years. Cincinnati has very high hopes for Dalton, but its track record hasn't been good.

Since 1991, the Bengals have had a series of misses that include David Klingler, Akili Smith and Donald Hollas. The one hit was Carson Palmer, which wasn't difficult to scout because he was the No. 1 overall pick in 2003. Some would even argue that Palmer was a bust -- at least relative to the expectations that came with his lofty draft status.

Because Palmer is expected to be traded or retire, the Bengals hope Dalton can buck their trend of quarterback misses and develop into a quality starter.

Most rookie QBs have a hard time their first year. Add to it, the current labor strife and lack of time to be around the facility and other players, it's only going to make it that much harder for him to be successful.

McElroy handed the ball off for 3 years at Alabama... I have no idea why people talk about him like he has a chance in hell of being a good QB.

He complete 6-of-11 pass attempts for 58 yards while being sacked five times and losing 27 yards.

I'm sorry but this guy was lucky to get drafted. He is horrible...

Akili Smith and Klingler were flops. But the rest of those guys are mid-to-late (4-7) round prospects. Are we really supposed to be shocked that three 7th rounders and a fifth rounder didn't make it?

Lewis must think that Dalton is mentally tough enough for AFCN football. His rookie season is doomed if he starts, but maybe he can rebound. With a shortened off-season (assuming there's a season at all) this kid is going to have a very short learning curve with two of the top 5 Defenses in the league in the same division.

What Marvin Lewis thinks really doesn't matter much. It's not like he has a track record of success.

Dalton will just be raw meat for the Steelers defense.

And the Ravens as well. Is Marvin really going to feed this kid to the wolves like that?

Jay Gruden: Andy Dalton was the best in the draft for Bengals’ offense

Posted by Michael David Smith on May 7, 2011

Andy Dalton was the fifth quarterback taken in last week’s NFL draft. Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden thinks Dalton was the best of the bunch at doing what his offense requires.

“What impresses me is the location of the throws. He gives his guy a chance to run after the catch,” Gruden told Bengals.com. “That’s very important throwing to backs, throwing to [Jermaine] Gresham, throwing to A.J. Green. A big part of these guys’ strength is the ability to run after the catch. This offense, if we do throw shorter passes, four, five yards, we’re throwing it to a location so they can catch and run. I think this guy does the best job of anybody in the draft, in my opinion, of doing that. I’m not saying nobody else can’t. I just thought he was the best one at it.”

Gruden’s comments echo those of Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis, who said he thinks Dalton is ready to start for the Bengals right now. That’s good, because if Carson Palmer follows through on his promise never to play in Cincinnati again, the Bengals may have no other good options.

The knock on Dalton in some quarters was that he didn’t have a strong enough arm and lacked the ability to throw the deep ball, but Gruden said he thinks accuracy is what matters, and arm strength is an afterthought.

“It’s so overrated, it’s stupid,” Gruden said.

If Gruden is right, it was stupid of a lot of other teams to pass on Dalton in the first round.

Re: Marvin Lewis thinks Andy Dalton can start right away

Dalton is a very solid prospect. But more importantly the kid seems to have the will, work ethic, humility, intelligence and drive to become successful.

I wouldn't exactly write him of as a non factor. I remember many of our brethren of the homer persuasion whom said such things about Mccoy last season and that kid certainly has shown flashes of possibly becoming a larger problem for us than the 'slightly more accurate Roethlisberger clone' Joe Flacco.

Let's also not forget the fact that AJ Green would still be a coverage 'death sentence' for Macfadden, Gay and Clark with YOU throwing the ball to him. lol

Re: Marvin Lewis thinks Andy Dalton can start right away

Counting on rookies in general to start following a lockout filled offseason in which the newbs have no access to coaches, playbooks, minicamps, OTA's, etc. is stupid. Counting on a rookie QB to start under these circumstances is downright moronic. If they throw this kid to the wolves after an abbreviated training camp, he will be so shell shocked that it could potentially ruin what could have been a promising prospect.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Cedric Benson says it wouldn’t be “healthy” to bring Carson Palmer back

Posted by Mike Florio on May 11, 2011

With the Bengals drafting their quarterback of the future last month but apparently still holding out hope that Carson Palmer will choose to be their quarterback of the present, running back Cedric Benson thinks that, if Palmer wants out, the team should accommodate him.

“It wouldn’t be healthy for the team to bring him back,” Benson told Maurice Jones-Drew and Bryan McGovern of SiriusXM NFL Radio’s Late Hits, via McGovern’s Twitter page.

“To bring him back would be detrimental to the team,” Benson said of Palmer. “If he’s there [and] not happy he’s not gonna give us his best.”

As to receiver Chad Ochocinco, Benson used more general words, but his point was clear. “For this team to be a winner, management needs to make changes,” Benson said.

Of course, one of the potential changes could be Benson himself. He’s due to become a free agent once the lockout ends, and there’s no guarantee that he’ll be back.
