Re: Official PlanetSteelers 2011 Mock Draft Selection Thread

With the 97th pick and final pick of the third round and Planet Steelers Mock Draft the Carolina Panthers select.........

    Greg Romeus, Defensive End, Pittsburgh

Owner Jerry Richardson says, "We didn't draft Cam Newton?"
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

A big thank you to Ruthless for putting this together again. And also for picking up the ball when a few of us dropped it on some of these picks.

I always have fun with it. Keeps that last week-and-a-half before the actual draft moving along nicely. Although I do enjoy running a whole bunch of teams, I do think the Board Mock overall was better a few years ago when there was a more diverse set of opinions that added to the draft as a whole. As long as folks stay interested, I'll keep doing it!
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Thanks very much. Hopefully, we'll get better participation next year.

I picked Cameron Heyward to go to San Diego at 1.18 in our draft here. Guess we got good value at 1.31, eh?

and we saved the 2nd, 4th and 5th round picks we would have needed to move up to #17 ahead of San Diego for Heyward...Colbert is a friggen genius, huh?

Re: Official PlanetSteelers 2011 Mock Draft Selection Thread

Let's see how I did in our mock vs. how the actual teams did in the real draft (listing rounds 1-3 only, since that is how far our mock went). Note: There may be a different number of picks in first three rounds because I may have traded up or down in the mock, and the team may have traded up or down in the real draft.

                Denver:

I took CB Patrick Peterson, DT Stephen Paea, and DT Jarvis Jenkins

They took LB Von Miller, FS Rahim Moore, OG Orlando Franklin, and ILB Nate Irving

Survey says: I like mine better. It's amazing that 99.44% of all mocks had Marcel Dareus to Denver, but he went to Carolina in our mock and to Buffalo in the real draft. Miller is a heck of a player, but linebackers aren't the playmakers in the 4-3 that they are in the 3-4 (I think Miller may end up like Seattle's top 5 pick from a couple of years ago Aaron Curry...solid but not spectacular because of the system he is in). Meanwhile, I think Peterson is the best player in the draft and could have learned the ropes from an aging Champ Bailey. I also found it odd that they did not address the DT spot in rounds 2 or 3 after passing on Dareus, since quality d-linemen are vital when you are switching from a 3-4 to a 4-3 like Denver is...in fact, I thought DT was such a big need for them that I nabbed 2 of them in rounds 2 & 3.

                Buffalo:

I took QB Cam Newton, TE Kyle Rudolph, and OT James Brewer

They took DT Marcel Dareus, CB/FS Aaron Williams, and ILB Kelvin Sheppard

Survey says: I like theirs better. If Dareus was on the board for Buffalo in our mock, I would have taken him. The Bills are obviously satisfied with Ryan Fitzpatrick at QB for the time being (they did not draft a QB at all), and if he falls on his face, then they could be in the running for Andrew Luck, which should be much better than Cam Newton, in my opinion.

                Cincinnati:

I took QB Blaine Gabbert, FS Rahim Moore, and RB Ryan Williams

They took WR A.J. Green, QB Andy Dalton, and OLB Dontay Moch

Survey says: I like theirs better. Green is a beast, and they ended up with a QB they like in round 2 anyway. I think Moch is miscast in a 4-3, though...he's probably better suited in a 3-4. I think they should have jumped on one of the top RB candidates like I did in round 3, because Ced Benson is a free agent that is likely on his last legs anyway.

                Arizona:

I took LB Von Miller, QB Ryan Mallett, OLB Dontay Moch

They took CB Patrick Peterson, RB Ryan Williams, and TE Robert Housler

Survey says: I like mine better. Even though Peterson is my favorite player in the draft and they were lucky to have him fall into their laps, I think that the Cardinals' two biggest needs were QB and pass rush, and they addressed neither of them in the first 3 rounds. They are putting all their eggs in the free agent QB basket, which might blow up in their face again like it did last year when they signed Derek Anderson. With the ancient duo of Joey Porter and Clark Haggans at OLB, they needed a pass rusher much more than they needed another RB to go with Beanie Wells and Tim Hightower, or a TE who is more of an athlete at this point than a polished football player.

                Cleveland:

I took: WR A.J. Green, DE Jabaal Sheard, and DT Drake Nevis

They took: DT Phil Taylor, DE Jabaal Sheard, and WR Greg Little

Survey says: While I like the three players I took in the first 3 rounds over the three players they took in the first 3 rounds, I like the overall deal they got to obtain Atlanta's 1, 2, & 4 this year and 1 & 4 next year. For a team in rebuilding mode like the Browns, you can't turn that bounty down. It's funny that Atlanta offered the deal to Cincy first to go after A.J. Green, and they passed. The lesson, as always, is that Mike Brown's apple fell WAY far from Paul Brown's tree.

                St. Louis:

I took: WR Julio Jones and DT Jurell Casey

They took: DE Robert Quinn, TE Lance Kendricks, and WR Austin Pettis

Survey says: I like mine better. My Rams traded up to get Julio and paid much less than the Falcons did to get him in the real draft. The Rams needed an impact #1 WR for Sam Bradford, and while Pettis and Salas are respectible wideouts (I like them both), they are both possession type guys instead of gamebreakers.

                Detroit:

I took: OT Tyron Smith, CB Brandon Harris, and LB Mason Foster

They took: DT Nick Fairley, WR Titus Young, and RB Mikel Leshoure

Survey says: I like theirs better. Nick Fairley pairing up with Ndomakong Suh, Titus Young pairing up with Calvin Johnson, and Mikel Leshoure pairing up with Jahvid Best. Awesome job by Detroit here. I think they challenge for a wild card spot this year (provided Matt Stafford can stay healthy).

                New England:

I took: OLB Aldon Smith, OT Derek Sherrod, RB Mark Ingram, DE Christian Ballard, C/G Stefen Wisniewski, and WR Jerrel Jernigan

They took: OT Nate Solder, CB Ras-I Dowling, RB Shane Vereen, RB Stevan Ridley, QB Ryan Mallett

Survey says: I like mine better. I don't care that they massaged the draft boards again and ended up with 2 firsts and 2 seconds again next year...eventually you have to use these picks and turn them into productive players while #12 is still your QB. New England has lost their last 3 playoff games and a major reason why is they have no pass rush. They ignored their pass rush again. Two running backs and a backup QB? Really?

                San Diego:

I took: DE Cameron Heyward, WR Jonathan Baldwin, OLB Sam Acho, OT Jah Reid, and LB Colin McCarthy

They took: DT Corey Liuget, CB Marcus Gilchrist, LB Jonas Mouton, WR Vincent Brown, and CB Shareece Wright

Survey says: I like mine better. While I think Liuget is a solid player, I think he will be miscast in San Diego's 3-4...he's a prototypical 4-3 DT. San Diego also seemed to make some questionable reaches after that...I think my mock picks brought much more value than their actual picks.

                Kansas City:

I took: NT Phil Taylor, WR Torrey Smith, and OLB Chris Carter

They took: WR Jonathan Baldwin, C/G Rodney Hudson, DE Justin Houston, DE Allen Bailey

Survey says: I like theirs better. Trading down with Cleveland got them another 3rd round pick, which I like. We both took an early wideout to draw attention from Dwayne Bowe and we both took chances on guys with questionable character/work ethic (Taylor, Baldwin/Houston). They were able to address their OL early with a solid pick in Hudson, while I was not able to make such an improvement with only 3 picks in hand. You can see that I did like the eventual 5th round pick of the Steelers, since I took him in round 3 for K.C.

                Indianapolis:

I took: OT Nate Solder, QB Andy Dalton, and WR Titus Young

They took: OT Anthony Castonzo, T/G Ben Ijalana, and DT Drake Nevis

Survey says: I like theirs better. They double dipped on the OL, which I like (when I re-mocked the 2nd round myself after round 1 was in the books, I gave Ijalana to the Colts, so I obviously think it is a good solid fit). Plus I think Drake Nevis could be an active DT, which has been a trouble spot for Indy for some years now.

There you have it. I liked mine better 5 times and theirs better 6 times (I thought about making K.C. a push, which would have evened things out overall, but ties are like kissing your sister...and we wouldn't want that, now would we?).

Any other folks that want to give input about how they felt their mock turned out vs. the real thing, feel free to post your thoughts here as well!

I'm gonna be busy this weekend taking out my two Moms (my wife's and my own) so I probably won't be able to start working on it until Monday but I'll post a team-by-team summary using your format soon.

it's good to be humbled on occasion...

Re: Official PlanetSteelers 2011 Mock Draft Selection Thread

going over the selections for my teams it looks like I actually got one perfectly right:

                    Miami Dolphins

                    I took: 1 (15) Mike Pouncey, C , Florida.?3 (79) Daniel Thomas, RB , Kansas State

                    MIAMI?took:?1 (15) Mike Pouncey, C , Florida.?2 (62) Daniel Thomas, RB , Kansas State

Analysis: Mike Pouncey should be a starter from Day One. Daniel Thomas should compete for a starting spot, especially if Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown go free.

Summary: I actually did better than the Dolphins did because I didn't have to trade up into the 2nd round to draft Daniel Thomas, instead standing pat and getting him at 3 (79).
