Steelers To Bring In CB Buster Skrine For Pre-Draft Visit

anyone want to wager we may be selecting a CB or two in this year's draft? really going out on a limb on this one, huh?

Sources: Steelers To Bring In UTC Cornerback Buster Skrine For Pre Draft Visit

University of Tennessee-Chattanooga cornerback Buster Skrine is expected to make a pre-draft visit to Pittsburgh to visit with the Steelers prior to the NFL draft according to The National Football Post. Skrine conducted a private workout for the Ravens today, just one day after his Wednesday Pro Day work-out. In addition to the Steelers, Skrine also has visits scheduled with the Patriots, Browns and the Bengals. Skrine is a bit undersized at 5 foot 9 and a half, but had an excellent showing at the 2011 NFL Combine. Skrine is currently projected as a mid-round draft pick.

You can watch a highlight video of him below:

this one of those guys that i think just has "it". i don't care what school or conference he comes from. the kid has speed and the kid makes make plays. we would put him in our dime/nickel packages going up against a 3rd or 4th WR and i think he'd be great in that scheme.

Interesting- Skrine & Cortez Allen are both mid-round picks, more athletes than CB's at this point- (see Ike Taylor).

Wonder if the Steelers have "a guy" in mind early, and if they miss, then these types become contigency plans?

Or- given that the rookie CB is unlikely to get on the field much, wonder if the coaches have decided to go after the raw talent, not the refined player, and teach them how to play Steeler defense? This would mean the likes of Keenan Lewis & Crezdon Butler might be expected to possibly take Willie Gay's, or even Bryant McFadden's spot next season.

Given how the Steelers do their business, they are rarely 'obvious' come draft time. Wouldn't surprise me if we are all left collectively gasping when CB isn't a pick in the first 2 rounds...

I think it is entirely possible that we draft two corners...one smaller, faster cover corner and one guy that fits our typical CB mold...a bigger guy with good tackling ability who could possibly convert to FS if things don't work out a corner. We seem be looking at both.

If we draft a bigger corner in round 1 or 2, like Aaron Williams or Ras-I Dowling, then we'll go with smaller guy like Buster Skrine later.

If we draft the smaller cover corner early, such as Brandon Harris, then we'd take a bigger corner later such as the Citadel's Cortez Allen or Utah State's Curtis Marsh.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Call me an OSU homer but I still think Chewka is going to be a great value. The guy ran a 4.4 40, and can flat out blanket a WR. He is still really raw but has all the tools to be great.

I really don't want a corner in the 1st. unless peterson or prince fall that far, which of course, would not happen. Same thing with tackle. I was watching Mayock a few days ago and he said that none of these guys would be a first round talent in last years draft. I think we need to improve the interior of our O-line and our NT depth. I like the thought of going up and getting Pouncey (which if you can read, you already know). by and large, I'm not very impressed with the late 1st round prospects.

Say It Ain’t So, Joe Edition

Former Steelers cornerback Joe Burnett faces a DUI charge down in Florida after he was arrested by Orlando police on March 16th. Burnett was drafted by the Steelers in the 5th round of the 2009 draft and released after the 2010 training camp.

Although his his two-year contract has expired and he is currently a free agent, Steelers safety Ryan Mundy is optimistic he will re-sign with the Steelers.

The Steelers will reportedly have UTC cornerback Buster Skrine up for a pre-draft visit sometime over the next few weeks. Also Middle Tennessee State quarterback Dwight Dasher was worked out by the Steelers on Thursday as well. Dasher seems to be a slash type prospect. No word if he is scheduled for a visit to Pittsburgh.

I believe Burnett signed a futures contract with the Giants after the season (around the same time we signed for Michigan CB Donovan Warren).

                      I agree. For two reasons...

                      1) The more CB's we pick the better chance of getting a starter. (like LB's last year)

                      2) Teams go 4-5 wide on us all the time. We don't need 1 CB upgrade. We need 3.

                      3) Covering crossing routes is a completely different skill set than one on one deep coverage. We need more of the first.

If the Steelers drafted a guy like Quinton Carter in the 2nd- a FS that could play the slot WR, and drafted a CB like Skrine or Allen in Round 4- does that offer value too?
