Carnel Lake interviewing to be DB coach

It would be a great return for one of my all time favorites. Hopefully he has the skills.

Steelers interview Carnell Lake for secondary coach job
    Wednesday, March 02, 2011
    Gerry Dulac, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Steelers might be reaching back into their past to hire a secondary coach to replace Ray Horton.

Former safety Carnell Lake, a five-time Pro Bowl selection who played 10 seasons with the Steelers, is at the team's South Side facility today to interview for that position with Coach Mike Tomlin.

Lake is one of the team's all-time best safeties, recording 16 interceptions, 17 fumble recoveries and 25 sacks from 1989 to 1998. He also had five defensive touchdowns.

Lake was a secondary coach at his alma mater, UCLA, in 2009, but resigned after one season because of family reasons.

Horton left after the Super Bowl to become defensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals.

I was just talking to someone recently about how here we are with deep issues at secondary and Rod Woodson gets a DB coach gig with the ...Raiders???????
Lake might be great. He has real coaching experience and received accolades for his work with UCLA.

Rahim Moore had 10 interceptions in 2009 with Carnell Lake as his secondary coach at UCLA. Moore had 1 interception in 2010 after Lake left the program.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

If we hire Lake, could it be a clue that we are going to draft Moore?

Not sure a 4.57 40 at the Combine helps Moore's chances.

No offense, but the 40 is so over-rated. That is straight line speed, not football speed.

As for Lake; I loved him and would love to see him here as a coach.

You do have to take more into account than 40. They have shown how the simple training of running the 40 from a track standpoint can have a tenth impact. It's a gauge but looking at the shuttle and cone times are also helpful. One of the biggest is the position drills to see how fluid they are. See them in their backpedal, how the can flip there hips and turn to run, locate the ball in flight, and of course track it down and catch it. Also, response drills where they make direction changes based on the coach running the drill and how they close. All useful...But you have to show up on tape. That's #1. Moore shows up on tape. Not the best S to come out in past years but clearly one of the top 2.

That all being said, to comment of his combine workout. Would have like to see him be no higher than the 4.5 range. Not bad but didn't help. 11 on the bench is a concern in the immediate term. Broad & vertical shows some explosion in his legs. Shuttle & cone "respectable" for a S. Nice size hands to catch ball. Probably don't want him in the box with those short arms and weak upper body because he might struggle getting off blocks by WRs, RBs, or TEs so FS is his better position. If he ran low 4.5's and put up around 20 on the bench and had his cones better than 6.7, I would say he might have had a shot in the end of 1st. I think he positioned himself to come off no later than the top 15 picks of the 2nd.

Exactly what I was thinking. I remembered reading that the other day. I welcome Lake, and think he would make a great addition.

I always liked Lake. I'll support this hiring purely for nostalgic reasons, and I hope that he'll be a good coach.

I was unaware of his coaching track record, but that's a good start. I would think his versatility as a player should also help him as a coach.

I like Lake. He was talented. I really would have liked to have gotten Deshea Townsend. He was average but played above average because he was smart. I just hope the secondary improves......

So the fact that Moore had 1 INT after Lake left had something to do with it?

Not hardly. But I am sure he will tell the Steers if hired that Moore is one terrific cover safety/ball hawk.
