    Chadman's 2011 Mock Draft- Version 1

Yeah, here we go again..this will change, a few times, as more info becomes available. the Combine will likely change things soon enough. But as it stands, here's how chadman is thinking..

    ROUND 1.
BRANDON HARRIS CB MIAMI 5'11" 195lbs

Steelers biggest need is at CB. Harris could step in as the Nickle at least from Day 1 & has the skills to be a playmaker.

10/9/10: Harris is a baller - period. On tape, he produces and plays with the swagger and confidence you want to see out of a cornerback. He's a missle in run support and shows the ability to take on a block. In coverage, receivers really struggle to separate and offensive coordinators have stopped calling plays his way this season.

5/13/10: Brandon Harris broke up a whopping 15 passes last year and also had six TFL.

    ROUND 2.
    CHRISTIAN BALLARD DE IOWA
    6'5" 297lbs

Steelers DL is getting old. Ballard had a good Senior Bowl, often beating his man. Great size & comes from the Steelers beloved Big 10.

Crash would not mind this as the first two picks of our draft.

      Well done Chadman.

        ROUND 3.
        JAMES BREWER OT INDIANA
        6'8" 335lbs

Brewer is a top talent that will likely slide due to injuries. If the injuries do not turn out to be too bad, he's a steal here- should sit & learn behind big Flo for a year. Can play either side of the line.

          ROUND 4.
          ZACK PIANALTO TE NORTH CAROLINA
          6'4" 250lbs

The Steelers do not use a FB. Bruce Arians uses 2 TE sets. We know this. Knowing this, we must realise that the #2 TE is actually a STARTER. Matt Speath & David Johnson are not starting quality. Pianalto is a good in-line blocker, which should help to improve the Steelers running game. He also has decent hands to be the #4 or #5 outlet reciever for Ben if required.

            ROUND 5.
            DeANDRE BROWN WR SOUTHERN MISS
            6'6" 239lbs

DeAndre Brown is an impressive speciman. In case you hadn't heard, he broke his leg. Some might question his return to full speed as a result. But speed wasn't his asset. Size & hands are- and neither are hampered by his return from injury. Last season was lost due to muscle strains. Is he injury prone? Chadman hates that tag- injuries are random- particularly in guys this age. Playmaker. Has the ability to be the team possession reciever.

              ROUND 6.
              NATE WILLIAMS SAFETY WASHINGTON
              6'0" 215lbs

The Steelers FS position requires to play disciplined & smart. the FS must provide leadership on the field. These are all qualities Nate Williams provides. He's not a ballhawk. He's a hitter. with improved CB play, Williams can learn behind Clark & be groomed for the role in the future.

                ANTHONY GRAY NT SOUTHERN MISS
                6'0" 314lbs

No guarentees he'll be around in Round 7, but the Steelers need to look for Casey Hampton's replacement- or at worst Chris Hoke's, for the near future. Age will dictate the need to add young players on the DL.

                  Re: Chadman's 2011 Mock Draft- Version 1

Dammit Chadman, you make some good points. Different from what i was thinking but still good points. I really want Pouncey in the first. However, if Harris slips to 1.31, i don't think we can pass him up. (I personally think Harris and Pouncey will both be gone by our pick, but i'll wait until the combine results before making official projections.)

I might have to disagree with Ballard in the 2nd, it just depends on which NT's are still available. I have to think NT is a bigger priority if the value is there.

I love love LOVE Brewer at RT but i honestly believe he could still be there in the 4th. He's got a huge frame, which can make up for a lot of speed or technique flaws. The only issue i have with him is arm/hand strength, and by that I mean, I don't know that he has those nice vice grips to lock up the bigger stronger LDE's.

I think you're spot on with the need for a TE because: 1) We are probably losing Spaeth. 2) Our 2nd TE will actually flex down as a fullback on occasion (as you stated) so he must be able to run block, pass block, get separation, and catch... and those are hard to find in later rounds. 3) We have zero depth behind Miller. 4) That S.O.B. Arians is going to bitch and whine about "needing" a TE in order for his offense to function and the F.O. is probably going to listen to him. Having said all that, I don't know that Pianalto is a "good enough" talent. I would actually be more inclined to go TE in the 3rd (as crazy as it sounds) if Stocker or Saunders is still there.

I won't comment on the late rounders yet (it's too early, no tape for me yet) but please consider a kicker in your future revisions. Henery would be so so sweet. Overall, not bad for a pre-combine first draft.

                    Re: Chadman's 2011 Mock Draft- Version 1

                    Thanks SSB.

The Harris pick- personally, Chadman would be happy with either Harris, Jimmy Smith or Aaron Williams there- in that order actually. But for now, Chadman will dream a little & hope for the 'Playmaker' in Harris. One of the three, or perhaps more, will likely be on the board at #31, and Chadman is pretty convinced one of them should be the pick.

Ballard is interesting. He gets mixed reviews. A 3-4 DE that gets upfield penetration though, is a valuable asset. It lets you put LB's into coverage without losing pass rush. Or completely tips the scales in your favour if you blitz several players. Think of how good Ray Seals was in his time here. Aaron Smith is on the way out, Keisel is on the wrong side of 30. Only Hood is young enough to be considered a future starter. DE is important.

If the Steelers are convinced Brewer can last past the 3rd, then sure- wait on him. For Chadman- he's the best prospect after the top tier OT's. If he's there in the 3rd, and the Steelers are not sure he'll be there in the 4th...over draft him if you have to. OT is the most important position on the OL, and the Steelers have missed too often for comfort.

TE- glad we agree. Chadman will defend Arians here- if he had a Mark Breuner type TE opposite Heath, it would give much greater flexibility in the play calling, as it essentially adds an extra OL player & gives a) Ben more time & b) better run blocking- both have likely held back the Steelers O over the last few years. You can't just add any old TE though- the #2 TE must be a blocking TE- this actually then negates the need for that blasted FB! This is why Pianalto appeals to Chadman- more of the block-first type player. There are probably better TE's going to be available around this spot- but will they fill the need?

If we aren't going to throw to our 2nd TE, why not put a dominant blocker in there like Breuner who can catch the short passes if need be.

                          Hey Chadman,

                          Thanks for sharing your mock.

I would love to get Harris in the first. I think he'll likely be gone, but it impossible to say at this point. He would be able to start very early in his career and has a fantastic skill set.

Ballard is a steeler type pick. He is workmanlike and a high effort, high character guy. But, he wouldn't help much rushing the passer in our nickel package (and that is where we need help). He would likely develop into a good rotational 3-4 DE.

I've watched James Brewer in a couple of games. He blocked pretty well inline. He struggles with speed rushers. He looked like a turnstile at the Senior Bowl practices. He is a RT only in all likelihood (may be too tall for G). He has huge holes in his game, but it may be technique-based. Maybe Kugler can help.

Zach Pianalto is a bit of a reach in the fourth (without a good combine/pro day, he may go undrafted). If you want a blocking TE, what about the huge TE from VT, Andre Smith or Gantt from Michigan State? Personally, I like Rob Housler from Florida Atlantic. He is 6'6 248. He is a great receiver with legit speed from the TE position. He is a willing blocker with good size, but needs some technique help.

Deandre Brown has severe academic problems and many question his character and work ethic (hates to block and runs lazy routes). This combined with his injury history seems like more than the Steelers usually want to deal with.

Nate Williams is a good 6th round pick. Intense guy, heat seeking missile. I feel he is a pro SS though and not a FS.

Anthony Gray is on the small side for a NT in a 3-4. But, I'd be very happy with him in the 7th as he'd likely develop into a decent backup NT.

Good work. I look forward to your next mock.

Great Mock. I do doubt Harris is at 1.31 though. As you said, Jimmy Smith or Aaron Williams would be good choices too.

I do think you are going a little early for a TE and don't know much about you choice. I might switch where you have a TE and put the Safety pick there. Safety is a more urgent need or even another CB.
