    Mayock's Top 5 CB's...

    Cornerback:

    *1. Patrick Peterson, LSU
    2. Prince Amukamara
    *3. Aaron Williams, Texas
    4. Jimmy Smith, Colorado
    *5. Brandon Harris, Miami (Fla.)
If they fall like that in draft rankings, the Steelers could have the choice of either Smith or Harris- both would be very, very fine...

Personnally I do not think Smith is a could fit for the Steelers. He isnt the most physical corner and I will stick to my guns on this...if heathly Ras-I Dowling too me is the number 2 or 3 corner in this draft.

You may end up being right on this one Dee Dub. Pre-season he was ranked mid to late first round. His skill set has not diminished. The only question is, will he heal back to pre-injury form. Keep in mind, many players (including some of our own Steelers) go down to Tom Shaw's speed training program in Florida during the off-season and actually get FASTER than they were in college.

Lastly, CB is one of those positions where your skill set really needs to match the team's "scheme" to be successful. And no CB in this year's draft (besides Peterson) matches the Steelers better than Ras-I.

Hmm....this sounds a bit like a Steeler to Chadman though..

        Brandon Harris, CB, Miami
        Height: 5-11. Weight: 195.
        Projected 40 Time: 4.41.
Projected Round (2011): Top 25 Pick.
10/9/10: Harris is a baller - period. On tape, he produces and plays with the swagger and confidence you want to see out of a cornerback. He's a missle in run support and shows the ability to take on a block. In coverage, receivers really struggle to separate and offensive coordinators have stopped calling plays his way this season.

5/13/10: Brandon Harris broke up a whopping 15 passes last year and also had six TFL.

I agree with you 100%. I watched him a lot two years ago (2009), and that was the first thing that came to my mind. He fits the 3-4 zone blitz to a tee. Big, physical, best in zone but still no slouch in man coverage. I love the way he goes up and gets the ball. He can knock receivers off their route and has a ton of toughness. He would be a steal in the second.

A couple years ago I talked a lot about Jarious Byrd and how I thought he would excel at the next level and I was dead right. I feel the same about Ras-I.

Sounds like Harris is Ike Taylor without the tackling skills. Didn't he also have some legal or school troubles. I can't seem to find it now but thought I read about it.

This article seems to think he'll be okay tackling people (or, at least, will stick his head in and try to tackle).

Has Ras-I-Dowling recovered from his injury??? I am interested in his 40 time.

I think you can put a WR on Jimmy Smith island ala Revis. He has blazing speed. Smith is a very physical press cover corner. If he is available at 31 i think he is a no brainer but i don't think Smith will be there.

About time Steelers change their scheme. To win another SB Steelers will have to beat teams like Cheatroits, Packers,Saints.

Totally agree. We need to get press coverage guys instead of guys that can't cover man to man. Did no one learn anything from the Super Bowl?????????

I don't have much exposure to the guy but this is what I am reading from multiple sites.

What Harris lacks in size and tackling technique he makes up with desire and a willingness to throw his body around. He is not the greatest technique tackler, but he is super compeitive.

Marginal production in three years at Miami (132 tackles, four interceptions, four forced fumbles)... Not the surest tackler, flows well the to ball, but will miss tackles or give a lot of extra yardage to bigger backs... Needs to work on zone coverage skills, is not especially quick to read and react, much better at mirroring receivers in man coverage... Will miss tackles in the open field, needs to do a better job of breaking down in space.

Not overly willing in run support
                    Average in zone coverage
Needs to improve his coverage awareness
                    Can be beaten deep
                    Inconsistent
                    Not a great tackler
Gets his hands on a lot of passes but just 4 career interceptions
Struggled at times during a high profile match up in the Sun Bowl against Michael Floyd
Has the physical tools but is still refining his cover skills

I just don't see it. I have not known the Steelers to draft a DB who isn't also terrific in run support or a sure tackler. I go by history when looking at mocks, and I just don't believe the Steelers will be very high on the guy. But, I have been proven wrong before and I'll be proven wrong again I'm sure.

I think you got Smith confused with someone else. Smith is a physical CB. I like Dowling too. He could be a possibilty in round 2 if he doesn't time well at the combine. He might not be a 100% healthy and could slip.

Dude, you love players from UVA. I thought you were going to propose to Chris Long a few years ago.

Dowling is a good corner with great size and physicality. But, he gets turned around too easily by quick receivers that can change gears. I saw him get owned in 2009 (when healthy supposedly) against a no name short, quick kid. Multiple times in man coverage he lost this guy or got turned around. Granted, it was one game. But, I felt he was really exposed and, frankly, looked lost.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

Well personnel should dictate the scheme. Do you believe if Steelers had Revis opposite Ike Steelers CB will be still giving 10 yard cushion?

I believe because BMac and Gay can't play man coverage they have been asked to play 10 yards off the WR to avoid big plays. Again i am just throwing 10 yards out there but 10 yards cushion is not working against Packers,Cheatroits etc etc.

Packers made Steelers Defense look like a joke to be frank. Same thing will happen next season as more and more teams will avoid running the ball against Steelers and dink dunk for 5 yards every play.NFL is a copy cat league. Will it work for all the teams??Nope but now there are 3 teams..tomorrow there could be 6 teams.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.
