OT: Shaun Rogers among six Browns cuts

Shaun Rogers among six Browns cuts

Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on February 9, 2011

The Browns have started to whittle down their offseason roster, with one big name headlining the list of cuts.

Zac Jackson of FOXSports Ohio reports that defensive tackle Shaun Rogers is among five Browns to be notified they are being released. Also on the cut list: linebacker Eric Barton, linebacker David Bowens, tight end Robert Royal, and tackle John St. Clair.

(UPDATE: The Browns have since confirmed the cuts.)

The final four names on the list are no surprise. They are “Mangini guys” and their production no longer matched their salary. Bowens and Barton may not have fit in the team’s new defense.

Rogers’ release is more notable. The Browns clearly believed he was no longer worth his $5.5 million salary, and they are probably right considering his lack of playing time and shaky health in 2010.

With that said, Rogers is “only” turning 32 years old this year and can by a truly dynamic player when motivated. It will be interesting to see if teams show interest in signing him this month before a possible work stoppage.

(UPDATE II: The Browns also cut defensive lineman Kenyon Coleman.)

No need because if he screws up all of the sudden his past will be used against him.

I seem to recall that Rogers and Casey Hampton were once teammates on the D-line at Texas.

Yes, and like most positions at tu, especially on DL or OL, 1 guy works hard and carries the group of overtalented players. In this case, Hampton carried Rodgers lazy behind for years, despite Rodgers probably being the more talented player. Just no effort or desire out of him. Stay clear.

Browns clean house, cut six veterans

          By James Walker
          ESPN.com

New Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur made his first major step of the offseason Wednesday by cleaning house with veteran players.

The Browns cut six veterans, which include tight end Robert Royal, offensive tackle John St. Clair, defensive linemen Shaun Rogers and Kenyon Coleman and linebackers David Bowens and Eric Barton. Most were considered favorites of former Browns head coach Eric Mangini.

"We kind of had a feeling that with a new regime Cleveland wanted to go with younger players," said Bowens' agent, Harold Lewis. "David was Eric's guy and [former defensive coordianator] Rob Ryan's guy. So it's not a surprise."

The biggest name on this list is Rogers, who is one of the NFL's most dominant defensive linemen when healthy. Rogers had his best year under former Browns head coach Romeo Crennel in 2008 but suffered injuries and never played as well during his two seasons under Mangini.

Coleman was acquired from the Jets when New York traded up to select Mark Sanchez in the 2009 NFL draft. Of the seven players the Browns received in trades related to the Sanchez deal, only center Alex Mack is still with Cleveland. Safety Abram Elam, who was included in the trade, is a free agent.

Little to no chance he ends up here but that big bastard can get some pressure up the middle when he's motivated.

He better not land here after his act of douchethuggery against Ben a couple years ago. Ramamber when he bounced Ben to the ground with his belly way after a play was over? No flag and a ref was standing right there. let him fall out of the league.

I've heard some stupid reasons for not signing someone but that one might take the cake.

They traded back 3 times in that draft, allowing the Jets to get Sanchez at 5, the Bucs to get Josh Freeman at 17, the Eagles to get Jeremy Maclin at 19, and all they have to show for it now is Alex Mack, who they took at 21. So, essentially, they moved back 16 spots in the first round, and ended up with nothing for it.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I heard the funniest statement about the Browns cutting 6 players on Mike and Mike this morning. They were doing a bit on the NFL and they said, that "The Browns cut 6 players yesterday and that the rest of the team is jealous of the 6 players that were cut."

Report: Redskins interested in Shaun Rogers

The Redskins have reportedly already "reached out" to free agent DL Shaun Rogers.

Per Fox Sports' Jay Glazer, Rogers is expected to visit the Redskins this week, perhaps as soon as Friday. With Albert Haynesworth as good as gone this offseason, Rogers would be a replacement at nose tackle. Rogers can still get after quarterbacks, but he's no longer a top-notch run stuffer.

I know there are a lot of questions with this guys character but he can still be a game changer and take over a game like a Sapp, Haynesworth, Peppers, Williams, etc.

Tomlin could be a much better diciplinarian then the Redskins and can get 100% effort/production out of this guy but he also may say that you must be self motivating at this level which cant be taught.

If the Redskins dump Haynesworth, then going after Rogers makes sense for them, since they'll have a big need in getting another overpriced d-lineman who is dominant 20% of the time and a fat lazy slob 80% of the time.
