Wide receiver Wes Lyons, a Woodland Hills High School and West Virginia graduate, said he has signed with the Steelers.
The 6-foot-8, 245-pounder was a three-year starter for the Mountaineers, finishing his career with 42 receptions for 517 yards, including 20 for 263 yards as a senior in 2009.
Lyons attended a minicamp with the New York Jets last spring but did not play this past season. Lyons worked out for the Steelers in late December and signed a two-year contract with the team Thursday.
"It's a great opportunity," Lyons said. "I'm blessed to have an opportunity to be in the NFL, especially with the hometown team. It's like a dream come true."
how about taking a chance on this 6'6" WR in a later round?
At combine, DeAndre Brown takes first step to NFL

HATTIESBURG-- Before his career began at Southern Miss, DeAndre Brown had his eyes set on playing in the NFL.
Three years later, the former Ocean Springs High School standout takes the first step toward achieving that goal when he attends the NFL Scouting Combine this weekend in Indianapolis.
Brown, who left Southern Miss after his junior season, made the final decision to leave college after a season in which the 6-foot-6, 235-pound athlete missed the majority of the year with a leg injury.
“I made the decision while sitting on the bench with the leg injury,” Brown said. “If I came back for my senior year, I could risk another injury.
“My dream has always been to play in the NFL. I was going to chase my dream and my mom (Patricia Brown) knows that. I also made a promise to (mom) that I would finish school, too. Right now, I am going to chase my dream as long as I can.”
The combine, which can be seen on the NFL Network, opens Thursday and concludes on Sunday.
Brown will check in Thursday before meeting with NFL officials on Friday and Saturday and working out on Sunday.
The workout consists of 40-yard sprints, agility drills and bench press.
“Everything that I have been working for (with trainer Sam Morris) in Oak Grove has been for the combine,” Brown said. “I’ve been working out five days a week. I’ve worked so hard that my body has become used to the hard work.
“Right now, I bench-press 385 pounds and I run a 4.53 in the 40. I’ve been working on my start to go with my top end speed. They (scouts) want to see me come out of the block faster. Not start slow and end fast. I am working on explosive speed like Chris Johnson (the Tennessee Titans running back). I want to run a 4.4 at the combine.”
The ultimate goal for Brown?
Moving up in the NFL Draft set for April 28-30.
According to nfldraftbible.com, Brown is projected as a fifth-round selection.
However, his agent, Bus Cook, said Brown will eventually become one of the best wide receivers in this year’s class, which includes Alabama’s Julio Jones and Georgia’s A.J. Green.
“I could not ask for anymore than what he has given us the last four to five weeks,” Cook said. “He has worked extremely hard and I’ve spoken with people (NFL doctors) who tell me his legs will not be an issue. In fact, his legs will be stronger than ever.
“In two years, I think this kid will be as good as any receiver in this draft. I think he will go in the middle rounds. I know a couple of teams, and I will not mention which ones, that have already moved him up on their boards.”
At the combine, Cook expects Brown to bench-press 225 pounds 25-plus times and run a 4.4 or 4.5 before NFL scouts.
“He is too talented not to get drafted,” Cook said. “He is 6-foot-7 in cleats and weighed 230 or 235 pounds. At the age of 18, he had the ugliest leg break that I’ve seen since Joe Theismann. “Then, this year he finds out he has another stress fracture and has a second rod put in the other leg.
“But I think he has turned the corner. Some kids you have to kick in the butt and some kids you have to put your arms around them and let them know things are going to be fine. I had to put my arm around him.”
Once the combine is complete, Brown will await the draft.
But he has no team preference -- at this time.
“I would love to play for the Saints, but it’s a blessing just to be in this position,” Brown said. “All I want is a chance and i will make it.
“I do not want to be a failure. My biggest fear is being a failure to my family, my team, the fans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I do not want to be a guy who plays in the league for two years, then you seen him flipping burgers at Burger King.”
