    Max Protect? Max Blitz!

Over the past couple meetings between the Steelers and Ravens, Cam Cameron offensive coordinator of the Ravens, has often run a Max Protect approach to counter the Steelers Blitz. And to a degree he has had some success with this. He has essentially at times had more blockers than Steeler pass rushers. There is a flip side to this coin. When they block with 7 or 8 this means they only have 2 or 3 receivers in the pattern. Because Flacco has had time in the pocket this has allowed one of those 2 or 3 receivers to get open regardless of whether or not the Steelers have had 6 or 7 in their secondary. In the NFL if you give a QB 7 seconds to throw, somebody eventually is going to get open.

If you go back to the winning TD that Flacco threw to Houshmanzadeh the Ravens were in a Max Protect while the Steelers rushed 5 (7 blocking 5). Todd Heap and one of their RB’s stayed in the backfield and picked up the blitz. I strongly believe that in order to counter this effectively, the Steelers need to bring more than 5 rushers after Flacco when they see Todd Heap lined up in the backfield. 6 or 7 rushers will force Flacco to get rid of the ball sooner than he wants to. This is better in my opinion than letting him wait over 7 seconds in the pocket for someone to get open.

I think this is a good thought. I'm no coach but from my reasoning I might be hesitant to do that until they cross the 50. But, I must admit I am a fan (to an extent) of a bend but don't break mentality. Don't give up quick scores but apply heat (and apply some serious heat as you stated) when it matters.
    Trolls are people too.

The comment about crossing the 50 is a key. Many teams do similiar things and that gives the defense the "bend but don't break" look. It is easier to defend 0-50 yards versus the whole field. It is also easier to design taking away passing lanes and areas of the field where the QB can get rid of the ball in the face of a blitz if the DC has a shorter field behind his D.

I believe in the first half, you will see more overload blitzes than all out. Try to attack a side and guess right where the 5 guys coming gives the same effect as sending 6 or 7 because you will have 3 or 4 attacking one side while 2 or 3 offensive guys end up punching a defender and the defender drops. That is the better way to approach early, but again it is all about guessing right and the pass protection being called out wrong.

That all being said, DL also picks his spots to blitz. I have noticed things over the years that DL does not show his hand in the first half and allow the OC to adjust at half. He also holds his cards tight to his chest if the game is in hand. SO expect two different defense on the field tomorrow. The defense to keep it close and the "bend but don't break" mentality in the first with DL picking his spots to blitz. Come 2nd half, prepare to see his elaborate blitz & coverage packages hit the field if the game is close. He has things up his sleeve for playoff football and the Ravens being a team we see twice a year...He might have to roll them up.

I say we overload one side and send Troy/Timmons/Worldis from the other.

And delayed blitzes up the gut with Farrior/Timmons and off the edge with Gay/Ike/Bmac/Troy.

I really think the speed guys like Timmons/Troy/Worldis can create confusion by forcing quicker decisions.

They also run a bunch of unbalanced line formations. Something I wish we would try.

i recall back in 05, manning tried to max-protect but still ended up with 'protection issues'. I think DL will have a winning strategy tomorrow.
