Steelers secondary coach Ray Horton Cowboys' DC candidate

Pittsburgh secondary coach Ray Horton enters Cowboys' DC search

Pittsburgh secondary coach Ray Horton has emerged as a candidate for the Dallas Cowboys' defensive-coordinator position, according to an NFL source.

Horton played 10 years in the NFL, including a four-season stint (1989-92) with the Cowboys. He has been an NFL assistant coach for 17 years, including the last seven years with the Steelers. Horton worked for well-regarded defensive coordinator D!ck LeBeau with Cincinnati and re-joined him with the Steelers in 2004.

Under LeBeau, the Steelers have had a top-shelf defense. In the last five seasons, the Steelers have annually ranked among the top seven for fewest offensive points allowed and top nine for fewest yards from scrimmage allowed. Pittsburgh this season was first in offensive points allowed with 217 and second in yards from scrimmage allowed with 276.8.

If Pittsburgh were to lose a divisional-round playoff game against Baltimore on Saturday, the Cowboys could interview Horton next week. If the Steelers advance to the AFC final on Jan 23, the Cowboys would have to wait until the week after that game.

The Cowboys have previously interviewed Vic Fangio and Greg Manusky for the position, and Paul Pasqualoni remains an in-house candidate after handling the defense for the final eight games this season. Manusky is interviewing today for the same job with San Diego.

Ed: Cowboys Interested in Steelers Horton

    THURSDAY, 13 JANUARY 2011
    WRITTEN BY ED BOUCHETTE

Ray Horton, who coaches the Steelers secondary, is a candidate to become defensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys.

New Cowboys coach Jason Garrett reportedly wants to talk to Horton. However, the Cowboys cannot ask for permission until the Steelers either lose in the playoffs or win the AFC championship game, which would give them two weeks before the Super Bowl.

Horton was an unsuccessful candidate for defensive coordinator at the University of Houston one year ago.

Garrett already has talked to at least two other candidates for the job.

Rob Ryan will interview with Cowboys for DC spot

Rob Ryan, apparently no longer wanted in Cleveland , will interview with the Dallas Cowboys for their defensive-coordinator opening, two NFL sources said tonight.

Ryan has one year remaining on his contract with the Browns, but he has not been seen at the team's complex since the end of the season. He was conspicious by his absence when new head coach Pat Shurmur was introduced today.

Rob Ryan is one half of a flamboyant pair of twin brothers in the NFL. Rex Ryan, a former defensive coordinator, is head coach of the New York Jets.

Rob Ryan advocates the 3-4 defense, which the Cowboys use. He has been an NFL coordinator for seven seasons: five with Oakland and two with Cleveland. The Browns this season finished 15th in offensive points allowed with 19.4 per game and 22nd in yards allowed with 350.1 per game.

The Cowboys believe they will not be able to add any of their top three candidates. Paul Pasqualoni , the defensive coordinator for the final eight games this season, returned to the collegiate game by taking the head-coaching job at Connecticut. Greg Munansky is close to taking the same job with San Diego, and Vic Fangio is expected to follow new San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh to the 49ers.

        Ray Horton?

What talent has he developed? No one. Anthony Madison is our nickelback and not Lewis or Butler (the kid in camp who had all the potential). Joe Burnett is gone. Gay has regressed in the past two years.

How is our secondary playing outside of Troy and Ike (who he did not develop)? average at best

Why in the world would you hire this guy?

I think he is actually a coach who could be replaced.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

I say we trade Horton and Arians for a bag of:
