Look for Whiz to come after Steelers linebackers coach

Look for Ken Whisenhunt to come after Steelers linebackers coach Keith Butler to be his defensive coordinator again. Whis has tried to get Butler a couple of times, first when he was hired as the coach in Arizona and again two years ago when Butler turned them down.

Whisenhunt fired his defensive coordinator Billy Davis after two seasons. Davis was the fall guy for the inability of the Cardinals to sign several of their top defensive players who left via free agency.

Butler is considered the top defensive coach on the Steelers after coordinator Dick LeBeau and the man most likely to take over should LeBeau retire.

The Cardinals are expected to ask permission from the Steelers to talk to Butler, if they already have not done so. They would have to talk to him before the weekend via NFL rules.

What was the word on why Butler has turned him down a couple of times? I know it's got to be more than they are the Cardinals (that of course is taking the assumption Bulter has aspirations to be more than an LB coach).

Think the Steelers have already spoken to him about taking over the reigns as DC when Lebeau retires and he's content to wait it out for a couple of season?

I'm sure Lebeau has told him of his intentions and the Steelers have probably given him some assurances to the position.

If these discussions haven't taken place, then I have no idea why he hasn't left yet.
He will get more benefit from working under Lebeau. He will get smarter in the system and a greater understanding that will carry him later. I think some have mentioned that he calls plays and does some of the DC work from time to time as training. Not sure how much of the reins they have released to him.
The biggest problem for him in staying is that how will he follow a legion. Half the Lebeau lovers here will crush him when he falters from time to time, which he will. He will need to be given leeway which luckily the Steelers smartly do already.

Why would someone want to leave the Steelers organization and go the dysfunctional Cardinals organization? Because Whis is there? Please!!! Big deal, another season like the last one and he won't be there much longer after totally botching the QB situation.

Let's further evaluate:

Tomlin > Whis
Rooneys > Bidwell
Steelers Defense > Cardinal defense
Steelers young talent > Cardinals young talent
Steelers have franchise QB > Whis can't decide what a QB is

Butler has a great deal here. He probably knows he inherits a Top 5 defense in the best organization in the NFL.

The Cards need a QB first. Then they can worry about every thing else. Fitz is being wasted in that aweful offense.
