No one wants Jeff Reed – at least for the money he’s owed

November 17th, 2010 by Matt Loede

Now former Steelers kicker Jeff Reed cleared waivers today, meaning he’s free to go to any team that inks him. The kicker (no pun intended) is the fact that Reed was owed over $1 mil of his $2.8 mil salary.

One team that likely is going to take a long look at Reed is the Dallas Cowboys, as David Buehler isn’t having a great season for the Cowboys, who themselves have struggled.

Buehler has made 11 of 15 tries. Against the Giants on Sunday he had the wrong kind of hat trick: blocked PAT, missed 34-yard field goal try and a kickoff out of bounds.

I’m sure Reed won’t complain about the kicking conditions in Dallas like he did in the Steel City.

Jeff Reed says “no thanks” to Bengals, former teammates lament his departure

Posted by Mike Florio on November 18, 2010, 9:35 AM EST

Initially, agent Don Henderson wasn’t willing to identify either of the teams that have offered a job to former Steelers kicker Jeff Reed.

Henderson has since decided to sing.

According to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Henderson acknowledged that the Bengals wanted Reed.

When the Bengals signed undrafted rookie kicker Aaron Pettrey after Reed was released on Tuesday, we assumed that the Bengals were simply filling the roster spot after the placement of Mike Nugent on injured reserve, in the hopes of making their interest in Reed less obvious. Don’t be surprised if the Bengals sign a guy with actual regular-season kicking experience before Sunday.

Meanwhile, the sudden termination of Reed has ruffled some feathers in the locker room. Henderson said that linebacker James Harrison and other players “flooded” Reed with phone calls, and that many of his teammates “could not understand” the decision to dump the man who had kicked for the Steelers since 2002.

“It just gives us a sense that nobody’s bigger than the team,” linebacker James Farrior said, per Bouchette. “Jeff Reed was one of our main guys around here. He’s been here nine years, he came in with me. He’s definitely a leader who came in, he’s always done a good job. He’s had a rough year this year. They decided to release him. It was a big release, he’s a big-time player, and we’re sad to see him go.”

“I hate to see Jeff Reed leave under the circumstances in the middle of the season,” receiver Antwaan Randle El told Bouchette. “I’m sure something other than just kicking had to be involved in that deal.”
We think Randle El’s instincts are right on the money. The Steelers could have easily justified letting Reed walk away after the 2009 season, but instead the Steelers used the $2.8 million franchise tag to keep him around. Surely, something more than a shanked 26-yarder in a game the Steelers were going to lose anyway caused the Steelers suddenly decide to move on.

Considering that there are only 32 such jobs available in the entire d@mn world, it is pretty dumb to pass on an offer when one is presented to you.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Glad he ain't with the BUNGLES, since he is the SUPPOSED "MASTER" of kicking at HEINZ FIELD. Send him to the Cowboys.

@ruthless, agreed. "Beggers Can't Be Choosers" he's probably to busy drowning his sorrows at some bar

Why would he turn down an offer? That doesn't make any sense at all. Does he think the Steelers will invite him to camp next year? later this year after Suisham is shown the door? Could there be legal problems pending? What could possibly motivate you to turn down an offer to play?

It's not like a kickers job is hazardous and he felt like he was being low balled, this is a strange turn of events.

I have to wonder if there may be a substance violation coming down the road that the Steelers and Reed were notified of. I've always seen Reed as most likely to get high with Stupidio.

Just seems like the whole issue was a little strange.

He get a million for sitting at home the rest of the year. The Steelers still have to pay him his money, unless he signs with someone else. Guess no one else wanted to pay him more than a million?

The teams are allegedly SF and Cincy.

                    They suck.

Why jump at those offers when a team like the Jets are <> close to cutting their kicker?

Then he could be reunited with Santonio and they could take pictures of each other's wangs for a change (and send them to former Jets employee Jen Sterger, of course).

if a team claimed him, they would have had to pay the rest of his salary. since no one did, the steelers are on the hook for it regardless if he signs another deal with someone this year

any other deal he might sign will be in addition to what he already has got with the steelers, maybe thats why he's not in a hurry

I think Reed and his agent may also be looking to sign with a team that is willing to give Skippy the long-term contract he's been seeking.

they can afford to be patient since the Steelers are still paying Reed...
