Stefan Logan wins Special Teams Player of the Month Award

boy, am I ever happy we got rid of Logan and brought in Randle-El to handle our punt returns!

Stefan Logan wins the special teams player of the month award after leading the NFL with a 35.9-yard kickoff-return average and coming in third in the league with an 18.4-yard punt return average. Logan also plays on the Lions' kick coverage units, where he has recovered two fumbles.

Who cares? He isn't a member of the Steelers.

I get your point but Logan was a Steeler and now sports an 18.4 yard punt return average versus ARE's 3.0 average...that's over 15 yards of field position every single time we field a punt!

did we really need to sign and keep WR Arnaz Battle? we kept him strictly for special teams and what does he have, something like two tackles?

Does it change anything? We play who we have. Its water under the bridge. I'm in no way thrilled with ARE but it is what it is.

Ill be the first to admit I was adamant about keeping Logan on the team since he broke the Steelers all-time record for total yards last season. But it was like a baby chick peeping out into a windstorm. "We cant waste a roster spot on just a kick-returner when we have so many good prospects." and "Logan cant play any other position."

I liked him as a Steeler and Im happy for him now.

Good for him. Always seemed a decent player in his own right & seems to have found himself a nice niche & guarenteed employment.

You can't have 54 players on your active roster. Someone had to miss out in Pittsburgh. Logan got cut, picked himself up, and got himself a new job. He's doing well. the Steelers are doing well.

                Good deal for all.

i'm glad he is helping a team that needs what he brings to the table.. Would have loved him here but Dressing him would have been pretty tough (if we are serious about getting brown and Sanders on the field that is)

Hindsight makes it too easy to say the Steelers made the wrong decision. I didn't want him coming out training camp to take up a spot just to return punts and still don't. Are hasn't played particularly well as a receiver or returner, but that's the way it goes. I'd make the same decision again in keeping a player that potentially offers you something at WR and as a punt returner over a guy who is strictly a punt returner.

I'm glad Logan has earned himself a job and is playing well, just not with the Steelers.

We could have designed some plays for him -- bubble screens, wildcat, pitches, misdirections. We should have kept him instead of El or Battle. Sanders and Brown could have made up for one of them.

Re: Stefan Logan wins Special Teams Player of the Month Award

Logan does fine when he has room to run and a team that can block.

ARE has none of that. Besides, his punt returns have been situational. He gets the nod when the Steelers are pinned deep after teams can't convert 4th down against a good defense. He therefore must usually call for a fair catch. If not, there isn't much room to run since the punts nornally only go 20-30 yards and everyone is in his face.

Stats don't always (do they ever?) tell the whole story.

So when the Steelers are not pinned back deep they will call on Sanders anyway.

Fair catches don't count against your average. El has returned virtually every punt this year. Sanders and Brown have one return each, I believe. El has had opportunities in every situation. Still, Sanders and Brown have each returned punts twice as far as El's best return. Don't make excuses for poor play. El has shown nothing as a returner.

I was in favor of keeping Logan and trying to work him into the offense. He didn't have to take up roster space as only a returner. Instead we have Madison and Battle who take up roster places and are only on special teams. WTF is the difference? Logan wasn't a bad special teams player.

Brown's returns in preseason convinced me that we would be okay letting Logan go. But instead of using him we go with ARE on punt returns and Sanders for kick returns. I know Sanders has looked okay as a kick returner but still nowhere near as good as Brown in my opinion.

I think we are hurting ourselves in the field position battle with our kick return strategy. Logan would have been better but what is worse we have Brown ON he team and he is better.
