PITTSBURGH (AP) - The Steelers have signed outside linebacker Chris Ellis to their practice squad after losing outside linebacker Thaddeus Gibson to the 49ers on a waiver claim.

Ellis, a third-round pick by Buffalo in 2008, was waived by the Bills on Oct. 11. A former defensive end at Virginia Tech, he was replaced there by Jason Worilds, now a Steelers backup linebacker.

Gibson, a fourth-round pick from Ohio State, was removed from the 53-man roster so the Steelers could activate defensive lineman Steve McLendon for Sunday night's game in New Orleans. Gibson was claimed Monday by San Francisco.

I would have liked Jason Williams (Cowboys released) over Ellis. Williams was trying to convert inside. At least he gives you the flexibilty if he ever makes the 53. Move him back to ROLB and go from there. Still ok with Ellis on the PS. Just that those VT players scare the hell out of me.

Buffalo Bills release Chris Ellis, activate Shawn Nelson
            Sal Maiorana • Staff writer • October 12, 2010

ORCHARD PARK — The Bills' upheaval of their roster continued Monday when outside linebacker Chris Ellis was waived to make room for returning tight end Shawn Nelson.

Nelson served a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance-abuse policy, and the Bills exercised a one-week roster exemption on him Sunday, which is why he was not active for the 36-26 loss to Jacksonville.

Nelson was activated Monday, so a player had to be released, and Ellis was the guy.

"We had to make a decision on Shawn and we felt like he's ready to play," coach Chan Gailey said. "We had to make room and Chris Ellis was the guy we decided to let go. He's been a guy who hasn't played a lot. You hate to lose anybody, but you have to make decisions."

The former 2008 third-round pick is just the latest in a series of poor high draft picks by the Bills. He never lived up to that lofty status in two-plus years with the team, and he joins 2008 second-rounder James Hardy on the unemployment list.

Ellis was originally drafted as a defensive end for a 4-3 defense, but the switch to the 3-4 doomed him. He tried to make the transition to outside linebacker, and actually started the first game in place of injured Reggie Torbor, but that was only because 2009 first-round pick Aaron Maybin isn't capable of starting.

In that game Ellis had five tackles and a sack, but once Torbor returned Ellis went back to the bench and has played sparingly since, just as he rarely played on defense during his first two seasons. He made no tackles in the last four games.

"He did some good things early in camp, but just the production hasn't been there," Gailey said.

For his Bills career, Ellis appeared in 15 games and had 13 tackles and one sack.

The Bills also held a players-only meeting Monday to air out some concerns. Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said it was the right time to do it, and running back Fred Jackson said it was a positive and productive session where a number of older veterans spoke up.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

Ed: Steelers Sign Former No. 3 Pick

TUESDAY, 02 NOVEMBER 2010 15:19 WRITTEN BY ED BOUCHETTE

The Steelers let a player drafted on the fourth round go and signed a player drafted on the third round.

The team today signed linebacker Chris Ellis to their practice squad. Buffalo drafted him in the third round in 2008 and waived him Oct. 11. He played the same position, defensive end, at Virginia Tech before Jason Worilds played it there. He also hails from Mike Tomlin’s home area, Hampton, Virginia. Apparently, Ellis could not adjust to outside linebacker this year in Buffalo’s new 3-4 defense. The Steelers will give him more time to do so.

They had an opening on their practice squad after signing defensive lineman Steve McLendon to their 53-man roster.
