Redundant Thoughts 2010 Week 8 @ Saints

    1. Here, I can help us get through this:

    2. The Steelers were due to lose one. Brees was due to not stink the stadium up. I suspected the Steelers would lose when Brees had two bad weeks in a row coming in.

    3. Like I was saying last week: this team is good, they are just not good enough. Keep in mind that some things are more difficult than others.

    4. Hey I’ve got an idea. Seeing as our D-line has 2 of three back-ups starting lets rush 3 and give Drew Freaking Brees all day long to find an open receiver. That sounds like a good defensive game plan right?

    5. Hey I’ve got another idea. In lieu of an offensive “game plan” (whatever the heck that is) let’s just use one of these:

    6. I guess it makes the most sense to have the Steelers-Saints game on Halloween night but dang that was annoying. I had kids coming to the door all through the first half. Steelers-Raiders would also work as would Raiders-Bucs.

    7. I knew the Steelers would lose when they not only failed to convert Ike Taylor’s interception to points at the end of the first half but they managed to give up three points to the Saints instead.

    8. As I was watching the game yesterday it finally dawned on me what was bugging me about the 2010 Steelers: there is a difference between the Steelers looking good and the other team looking not-so-good. Call me a pessimist but this year’s wins seem to have been much more the later than the former as of late.

    9. The southwest.com dancing and singing commercial makes me want to kick a puppy.

    10. … unless your name is Jeff Reed. Dang it Skippy! We didn’t hire you for your sour disposition towards towel dispensers.

    11. If the Steelers have to lose a game they may as well lose this one. The only thing this will cost them is their top spot on ESPN’s Power Rankings.

    12. Ladies and gentlemen, that was our offense going against a thoroughly depleted Saints secondary. The Steelers should have been able to make hay against that team all day long but for some weird reason the receivers kept running slow-developing routes.

    13. But keeping it in perspective the Steelers don’t suck. The Cowboys suck. They suck on ice! Here is a wonderful win-probability graph for the Cowboys-Jacksonville game that shows that the Cowboys stopped having a realistic chance once they got to Cowboys Stadium basically:

    14. And here’s the Steelers-Saints win probability graph:

    15. See, that’s what you felt like. At first it was all smiles and then some doubt crept in and then you saw some hope and then Jonathan Scott did his penalty thing and then zOMGWTFBBQyoumakebunnycry?! $%#$%*&!!

    16. Chris Collinsworth nailed it. He mentioned that the DLB defense has been, in times past, notorious for confounding opposing QBs. That hasn’t been the case lately. This D is stout against the run and does a decent job in coverage. Where they appear to be failing is in generating any pressure on the QB. At times the Saints were blitzing about 38 people by my count and thoroughly confusing Ben. When the Steelers blitzed the Saints it was almost like Drew Brees and his receivers were shortening their routes to compensate for the pressure! It was weird!

    17. At times it looked like Ben and Ward had never played a single game together. So many things to whine about so little energy to want to bother.

    18. The perspective on this game is to remind one another that this was the defending Super Bowl champs playing on their home turf after a couple of disappointing losses. The Saints came to play and they beat the Steelers. They didn’t just score more points. They physically made a statement. The Steelers did not play well enough to win. This loss did not speak well of the team’s coaching or play-calling but its primary point of failure was on the lines: offensive and defensive. The defensive line can always get healthier. The offensive line will likely not get any more talented. Ben will have to play better or the 2010 Steelers will go nowhere.

    Great Breakdown Redundant,

Emotions aside, you have to give credit for New Orleans on both sides of the ball. When it was reported that another CB went down in the beginning of the game I thought we were going to see passing numbers like the Green Bay game last year.

Instead it felt like Philly all over again. Easier said then done but roll outs and 4-5 wide receiver sets may isolate someone like Sanders on a safety underneath kind of like a Wes Welker route.

On 6 & inches it looked if NO was selling out to stop any inside penetration. Maybe in the future there will be play action to Speath?
