Thaddeus Gibson released.

For some reason I can't cut x paste from Steelers Depot?

Re: LB Gibson waived for DL McClendon

Would have preferred that they cut Arnaz Battle or Charlie Batch instead of Thad Gibson (does it really matter that vets have to pass through waivers at this point of the season unlike a few weeks ago when we were able to release an injured Leftwich in order to promote McLendon and re-signing him on Monday? Would teams be falling all over themselves to claim either of those guys anyway? Would any of us lose any sleep if we lost Battle or Batch?). I hope that no other upstart 3-4 team grabs Gibson now. I'd like to add him to our practice squad in McLendon's place.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

i'm sure they waited till today (day before a game) so they could sneak him on the PS.like the leftwich situation earlier this year

tough for another team to put him on their PS with having to worry about a game tomorrow

McLendon signed from PS, Gibson waived

I originally saw the news on rotoworld, however they didn't have any reference, but I was able to dig this up a few hours later from Steelers Lounge:

Steve McLendon Is Back; Thaddeus Gibson Is Waived
Posted on October 30, 2010 by adam

With Aaron Smith out for an extended period of time and Brett Keisel still hobbled with his injury, it was only a matter of time until Steve McLendon was brought back up from the practice squad. It wasn’t a question of if would happen, but when, and who would be going to make room for him.

On Saturday, we received our answers. McLendon is back, and Thaddeus Gibson is the odd man out.

Gibson, a fourth-round pick this year, being the guy to go is a bit of a stunner. Head coach Mike Tomlin said it was because linebacker is their deepest position and Gibson was simply the “low man on the totem pole.”

In six games he had yet to be active. The question now becomes whether or not there’s a team out there that likes him enough to make another roster move to make room for him, and then claim him on waivers.

It’s a tough situation for the Steelers because Gibson is clearly a young player with some upside, but as a team that’s in a “win now” mode they weren’t in any position to dump a player that’s actually contributing every week.

Frankly, I wouldn’t have been opposed to seeing Jonathan Dwyer as the guy let go on Saturday (Editor’s Note: JJ and Ryan agree). The Steelers aren’t exactly loaded at running back, but Dwyer, like Gibson, has yet to dress for a game and I can’t imagine him being picked up on waivers. And even if he is, a fourth-string running back isn’t exactly the hardest position to fill.

Not at all considering I was very much against the Steelers drafting him. I called him soft.

From Tony Pauline's pre-draft risers/sliders:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/football/nfl/11/23/risers.sliders/

"Thaddeus Gibson/DE-OLB/Ohio State: Another Big Ten junior who has taken his game to another level this season, Gibson leads the Buckeyes in tackles for loss (11). Area scouts feel he has big time potential. He's thought to be a more dedicated and instinctive version of Vernon Gholston, the sixth pick of the 2008 draft."

LOL he was listed as a "riser," but as far as being a bust, the Gholston comparison was dead on.

He was a talented LBr with terrific range and speed. With that said, he doesn't like contact and isn't powerful. I was shocked when the Steelers selected him because he doesn't epitomize Steeler tough. He reminded me of a Bruce Davis type.

LB is the Steelers' strongest and deepest position and like Tomlin said, "Gibson is the low man on the totem pole."

Well H, it's not like Gibson didn't have some upside. Look at Timmons. He wasn't exactly the most physical player I have seen coming out of college but he has bulked up, gotten stronger and has caught the physical bug. I think that's what the Steelers were thinking with Gibson.

I feel like a cry baby but I hate this move. Arnez has more value then this guy? Thad is only a Senior in college years!
I admit I never seen him in college but Ohio St rotates guys so stats wont say much. I have read that he did as many bench reps as Suh and has a fast motor.
I also just dont see the Gholston comparison. Hopefully he will get passed up by the Ravens but it seams like he secret is out that the Steelers 3rd/4th string could start on some teams.

Oh well...in the front office I trust

I know what you're saying but someone had to be the odd man out and it looks like Gibson is the one...I do hope he clears waivers and we can re-sign him to the practice squad.

Gibson waived to add McLendon

By Bob Labriola – Steelers Digest

Most often, a player is waived during the season because he has failed to meet expectations in some way, either on the field or off the field. That was not the case with Thaddeus Gibson.

Gibson, the team’s No. 4 draft pick from Ohio State, was waived in the back end of the move that added defensive lineman Steve McLendon to the roster. The Steelers announced the move today so that McLendon will be available for Sunday night’s game against the Saints in New Orleans.

Adding McLendon was made necessary by the injury to Aaron Smith, and it became a move that was necessary immediately because Brett Keisel is not yet ready to return to the field after injuring a hamstring against the Cleveland Browns on Oct. 17. Smith had surgery on Oct. 25 to repair a partially torn triceps, and while he will be out for what Coach Mike Tomlin called “an extended period of time,” he is not being placed on injured reserve at this time.

That meant McLendon had to be added to the 53-man roster this week, and that meant Tomlin had a difficult decision to make.

Tomlin is not a coach prone to lavishing praise on rookies who haven’t done anything yet in the NFL, but a hint of what he thought of the team’s 2010 draft class was found in how many were kept on the 53-man roster coming out of the preseason.

The Steelers made 10 draft picks last April. Eight were on that initial 53-man roster, and a ninth – Chris Scott – was on the physically unable to perform list after breaking his foot in late June. Doug Worthington, the defensive end from Ohio State picked on the seventh round, was the only draft pick waived.

Of the eight rookies on the roster, only cornerback Crezdon Butler, running back Jonathan Dwyer and Gibson have not been active for a regular season game.

Maurkice Pouncey has started every game at center and should be getting consideration as Offensive Rookie of the Year; Jason Worilds has one sack, four pressure and six tackles on special teams; Emmanuel Sanders is averaging 25.6 yards on eight kickoff returns and has three receptions for 55 yards, all of which converted third downs; Stevenson Sylvester is an important part of the team’s kick coverage, and he has six special teams tackles and a forced fumble; and Antonio Brown has two tackles on special teams and an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.

Butler plays cornerback, and there is no such thing in the NFL as having too many cornerbacks. Dwyer came on late in the preseason and showed himself to be a running back with potential, and the Steelers are a team that believes in running the football.

And finally, at this time in the NFL calendar, every player who is cut – even vested veterans – are subject to the league’s waiver system. That means if a player is cut and a team puts in a claim, that player must either go to that team or retire.

Earlier in the season when the Steelers needed a player at a specific position for the upcoming game, they released veteran quarterback Byron Leftwichand then re-signed him the day after the game. This time, Tomlin was not about to risk one of his veteran players by exposing him to the waiver wire.

“Linebacker is our deepest position,” said Tomlin, “and (Gibson) is the low man on the totem pole, so we had to make that necessary move. We were thin at defensive line. It’s just one of the casualties of this profession. It’s very much a reality, and that’s why we don’t take what we’re doing here for granted and we acknowledge that it’s precious.”
