    Formations the Steelers use

For the past several weeks I have been keeping track of the various formations the Steelers use. Which ones are used the most? Which ones are producing the big plays? Trying to get some insight into stuff like that. But 1st what are they? The letter name is only for ID purposes.

    A [3WR 1TE 1RB] B [2WR 2TE 1RB] CDE(these are closely related) C [1WR 3TE 1RB] D [2WR 1TE 1RB 1FB] E [1WR 2TE 1RB 1FB] and the self explanatory 4WR set. The following is how often these sets were used to attack different type opponents the past 3 weeks.

    Baltimore 50 offensive plays: A 17, B 15, C 5, D 4, E 3, 4W 3.

    Cleveland 62 offensive plays: A 16, B 15, C 7, D 2 E l7, 4W 4, O [other] 1, probably an empty set of one type or other that everyone loves so much!! LOL

Miami ----57 offensive plays: A 33, B 9, C 1, D 0, E 5, 4W 6 --on one of these plays #83 went in motion and set out wide so this was the 1st 5W set this year. A good idea from the Dolphin 7yd line on a 3rd and 6 but the safety was very alert and stopped Miller for a 3 yard gain forcing a FG. The Steelers 1st points.

Okay, a bunch of numbers. What does this mean. Nothing. I agree. This is why this stuff is not of much interest to most of us casual fans. However, if you are the curious type and would like to probe into how efficient or productive any of these formations are, you can find out by seeing the results of the plays in the game book playxplay. eg. if you are curious how the Steelers ran from the say B formation in the Miami game simply look up what happened on plays 1, 2, 20, 21, 22, 33, 34, 39, and 45.

Me, I just took a quick look at the plays and saw that big plays and/or successful plays can come from any set. eg. In the Cleveland game #7 hit #17 for 50yds getting out of big trouble from the C set. The very next play he hit #83 for 37 yds from the little used D set. Bye Bye Browns. I just noticed that in the Miami game the Steelers scored on two straight plays. Play 24 Pass to #86 for 21yds from the 4W set [maybe should call this the A4 formation?] and followed this on the 1st play of the next possession with the 53yd strike to #17 from the A formation. Anyway, like I said nice plays come from all the sets and RM has had nice runs from all of them also. I am beginning to suspect that the Steelers are not as predictable as some fans think.

Personally I kind of like the A and E formations. The E because often #33 is in then with Mendenhall. Like I said there are many questions that could be asked. Which formation do you think the Steelers run best from? Prove it! Which formation do you think is the most consistent overall? Prove it. etc. Okay, one final easier question. What do you think would be the best way [formation] to attack the Saints D? Why?

Oops! Sorry I forgot to mention that all of this stuff except the results of plays is taken from information provided on the steelersdepot.com fansite.

The standard nomenclature for football personnel groupings is to use a two digit number named based on how many backs (first) and tight ends (second) are on the field. From here, you can extrapolate how many WR's. Changing your letter names to standard personnel groupings:

      A [3WR 1TE 1RB] This would be 11 (eleven) personnel.

      B [2WR 2TE 1RB] This would be 12 (twelve) personnel.

      C [1WR 3TE 1RB] This would be 13 (thirteen) personnel.

      D [2WR 1TE 1RB 1FB] This would be 21 (twenty-one) personnel.

      E [1WR 2TE 1RB 1FB] This would be 22 (twenty-two) personnel.
Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

I hope E. that means we are running the ball on them and controlling the game like cleveland.

I think our best plays come when we bunch 3 WRs.

I saw NE bunch 4 WRs in a diamond.

Heck Bruce "the bunch" Arians couldn't even come up with a 4 WR bunch formation first.

It all depends on how we use the personnel in each of your scenarios.

And have you broken down the David Johnson formation? We run into 8-9 man fronts every time we have the DJ package.

Weren't the Steelers one of the 1st teams to use that bunch thing. They started doing that when Mularkey was here. No?

Yeah, I did look at the DJ thing. He was in only 5 plays[yes, all runs]. All as a FB. Not much happened. What puzzled me was earlier this year the Steelers had some success from that formation with #33 in there. Oh well!

I decided to stay positive. The Steelers simply ran into 3 really tough determined run defenses and I expect the running game to get back into gear soon.
