Tough roster decision looming for Steelers

    Tough decision looming for Steelers

    October 26th, 2010

The Steelers’ decision to keep injured defensive end Aaron Smith on their 53-man roster will force them to make a tough call later this week.

With signing another defensive lineman a necessity -- and all signs point to the Steelers promoting tackle Steve McLendon from their practice squad for the third time this season -- a difficult cut will have to be made.

The Steelers could release one of their cornerbacks but they used a third-round draft pick on Keenan Lewis in 2009, and they think rookie Crezdon Butler has the potential to start one day.

Making Anthony Madison the odd man out is risky as he is one of their best special teams players, and no one needs reminded of how the Steelers’ kick coverage units cost them dearly last season.

That same argument can be applied to Arnaz Battle, who plays sparingly as a wide receiver but is valuable on special teams.

The Steelers could cut offensive tackle Tony Hills and try to sneak him onto their practice squad but another team might snatch him up if he becomes available.

The same is true of rookie outside linebacker Thaddeus Gibson and first-year running back Jonathan Dwyer.

Whatever decision the Steelers make will come with some risk, but it is probably worth it if there is a decent chance that Smith returns at some point this season.

Out of the names mentioned in this article, I'd say we cut Battle.

I would hate to lose all the development that we put into Hills.

Gibson, Lewis, and Butler are all to young and way too much upside to risk losing. All could be potential starters for us.

It has to be Battle; the others have too much upside or investment. It doesn't seem that difficult to me. Of course, I think I would have IRd Aaron Smith as much as that pains me to say.

I wouldn't cut anybody. I like this team just the way it is, of course, with a healthy Aaron Smith. Lebeau is a creative guy. We've got a ton of linebackers in need of more playing time. I would let LaMarr Woodley rotate some at defensive end. He could do it. He played some DE in the superbowl during the last drive when he forced the fumble on Warner. Rotate Worilds and Gibson in at DE too. These guys were all DE's in college. Isn't this what position flexibility is all about. I'm very serious. I think this could be an effect way to remedy the lack of depth on the line until Smith hopefully can return.

I'd cut Hills, with Battle as a close second.

Speaking of Hills, I'm almost positive that he isn't eligible for the practice squad. You'd think that those who cover sports for a living would research the rules first.

That's my vote. He's the Carey Davis of this team.

Cut Jonathan Dwyer. Although, Spaeth is very tempting.

Why isn't Batch name mentioned? They can promote him to coach or something.

Cut Batch. I doubt anyone will sign him. He'll probably still be available if we need him down the stretch. I really think we need to protect our excellent draft class.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

I'll say it first...Anthony Madison. He may be consider "one of the best..." But when you are a "one of" that means there are others who can do the job too. Madison offers nothing as a position player on the field when every other name mentioned does.

No way do I cut and risk losing young players like Hills, Gibson, Dwyer or Butler to keep Madison.
