The Steelers’ coaches say they have some tough decisions to make when finalizing their opening day roster. But really, the cuts won’t be that difficult (Hint: Charlie Batch should be among them).

Certainly, trimming five players today for the first mandatory cut-down date will be a breeze.

And on Saturday when the roster must be reduced to 53, those cuts shouldn’t be that hard either.

Here’s Times football writer Mike Bires’ guess on what the roster will look like Sept. 12 when the Steelers open the season against the Atlanta Falcons.

    QUARTERBACKS (3)

Ben Roethlisberger, Byron Leftwich, Dennis Dixon

Sorry, Charlie Batch. You may stick around while Roethglisberger sits out on suspension. But when he returns, the Steelers won’t need four QBs.

    RUNNING BACKS (4)

Rashard Mendenhall, Mewelde Moore, Isaac Redman, Frank Summers

For the past two years, Redman has been a preseason sensation. He was cut last year, but this time he sticks. Rookie Jonathan Dwyer looked good in Denver, but it’s too little too late for the former Georgia Tech star who missed several camp practices due to injury.

    WIDE RECEIVERS (6)

Hines Ward, Mike Wallace, Antwaan Randle El, Arnaz Battle, Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders

With Brown and Sanders, a pair of rookies, flashing potential in the passing game and kick-return game, they’re keepers. That means Stefan Logan loses his job as the kick return specialist. Battle stays because he’s an experienced veteran who’s also solid on special teams.

    TIGHT ENDS (3)

Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, David Johnson

Johnson holds off Sean McHugh, who missed last season with a knee injury after playing on the Super Bowl team two seasons ago.

    OFFENSIVE LINE (9)

Max Starks, Flozell Adams, Chris Kemoeatu, Trai Essex, Maurkice Pouncey, Doug Legursky, Jonathan Scott, Ramon Foster, Tony Hills

There’s no sense keeping Justin Hartwig, the starting center the past two years. With Pouncey looking so good so fast, there’s no need to pay Hartwig $2.080 million to be a backup. Hills, who hasn’t played in his first two years with the Steelers, came on strong late in camp and saved his job.

    DEFENSIVE LINE (7)

Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, Brett Keisel, Ziggy Hood, Chris Hoke, Nick Eason and Doug Worthington

In a toss-up decision, Worthington makes the roster instead of Ra’Shon “Sunny” Harris, who’s had a lackluster preseason.

    LINEBACKERS (

James Harrison, James Farrior, Lawrence Timmons, LaMarr Woodley, Larry Foote, Jason Worilds, Patrick Bailey, Keyaron Fox

OK, so there are some tough cuts here. But perhaps fourth-round pick Thaddeus Gibson and fifth-round pick Stevenson Sylvester can make the practice squad. I’d keep Bailey because he’s been a strong special teams player.

    DEFENSIVE BACKS (10)

Ike Taylor, Bryant McFadden, Troy Polamalu, Ryan Clark, McFadden, Keenan Lewis, Joe Burnett, Will Allen, Ryan Mundy, William Gay and Anthony Madison

Madison, a cornerback, will never play on defense. But he’s just so good on special teams. So, he stays.

    SPECIALISTS (3)

Jeff Reed, Daniel Sepulveda, Matt Stewart

Why would the Steelers bring in Stewart so late in the preseason? It could only mean that Stewart, who was signed on Aug. 23, will replace Greg Warren as the long snapper.

    Dear Mike Bires,

Put down the crack pipe. No way will this team cut Gibson, Sylvestor, and Butler. These three guys are all 2010 draft picks that have shown good potential. Why cut all 3 and Dwyer? I can see Dwyer going and maybe (MAYBE) one of the first group will lose out in a numbers battle. But, if those four players all get cut, I'd be shocked and extremely disappointed.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

That is probably the worst roster list I have seen. Has this guy seen any of the pre-season?

I'm totally with you on this! Those guys ain't goin nowhere. Bailey is one on his way out. Bailey was lackluster last season and has not stood out so far this pre-season. IMO he was a one season wonder.

Essix is turrible . I would keep Urbik over him on potential alone then let Legursky Foster and Urbik fight for that spot.

That's the way I see it.

Summers over Dwyer? No way, Dwyer stays and Summers goes.

            WIDE RECEIVERS (6)

Hines Ward, Mike Wallace, Antwaan Randle El, Arnaz Battle, Antonio Brown, Emmanuel Sanders

I'd cut Battle as well and go with 5 WRs. If something happened and the Steelers needed a WR due to injury, they'd be able to find one, Grisham probab;ly won't get picked up. Keep 5 and use the roster spot to save a young talent.

            TIGHT ENDS (3)

Heath Miller, Matt Spaeth, David Johnson

Johnson holds off Sean McHugh, who missed last season with a knee injury after playing on the Super Bowl team two seasons ago.

            Yup

Hills, who hasn’t played in his first two years with the Steelers, came on strong late in camp and saved his job.

No problems with this, but I'd give Hills a chance with the first team and if he holds his own cut Adams and keep Hartwig for veteran leadership and flexibility (G or C)

            DEFENSIVE LINE (7)

Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, Brett Keisel, Ziggy Hood, Chris Hoke, Nick Eason and Doug Worthington

In a toss-up decision, Worthington makes the roster instead of Ra’Shon “Sunny” Harris, who’s had a lackluster preseason.

            Sounds right

            LINEBACKERS (

James Harrison, James Farrior, Lawrence Timmons, LaMarr Woodley, Larry Foote, Jason Worilds, Patrick Bailey, Keyaron Fox

OK, so there are some tough cuts here. But perhaps fourth-round pick Thaddeus Gibson and fifth-round pick Stevenson Sylvester can make the practice squad. I’d keep Bailey because he’s been a strong special teams player.

Gibson hasn't looked great in the pre-season, but I think I'd rather him over Bailey.

Use the extra spot by carrying 5 WRs to keep Butler. If you need another spot for a rookie Ryan Mundy can go as well; he hasn't shown anything in the past few years.

Stewart or Warren it doesn't matter, it's a wasted spot IMO. Teach the third TE how to snap the GD ball to a punter and to a holder, it can't be that difficult.

I was pretty down on Urbik, and figured that he was almost sure to get cut. But I've read some good reviews on his last few preseason performances, and think that he might have a shot at securing the last offensive line spot.

This is the second writer whose 53 includes Bailey - I believe that Bouchette did as well. No way would I keep Bailey over Gibson; I wouldn't even keep him over Sylvester. He shows nothing as a backup OLB, and I'm quite sure that Gibson or Sylvester could easily replace what he brings to the special teams.

You are right Phillyesq. Sylvestor would be a much better option than Bailey. He is already a good special teams player and could even be better than Bailey. Couple that with the fact that he could actually start in this league while Bailey is the worst 3-4 OLB we have on the roster and you have a real no brainer. I'll be very disappointed if we keep Bailey over Sylvestor. And while Gibson has a learning curve and missed a special teams tackle on Sunday. He is a 4th round pick who has shown great athleticism and pass rush potential in camp and flashes in the games. If he can't play special teams, he'll be a gameday inactive this year. But, there is no way you cut him. We got what we thought with Gibson. Dude has talent and is a project. We keep him two years and try to turn him into a pass rusher and special teams contributor.
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.
