Taylor apologizes to Steelers, fans for fight

Taylor apologizes to Steelers, fans for fight

Whatever concerns coach Mike Tomlin has after the Steelers' second preseason game, Ike Taylor's temperament should not be one of them.

That is what the veteran cornerback said Saturday night, a couple of hours after he got thrown out of the Steelers' 24-17 win against the Giants for fighting.

"I should know better," Taylor said. "I apologize to my teammates, apologize to my fans. I lost my cool, but it won't happen again."

Taylor and Giants wide receiver Hakeem Nicks started swinging at one another after the fourth play of the game. Both were ejected, although Nicks said Taylor initiated the fight.

"I was blocking downfield and trying to finish my block," Nicks said. "The next thing I knew, he was throwing punches, so I tried to defend myself."

Tomlin summed up the exchange with one word after the Steelers improved to 2-0 in preseason play: "Dumb."

Starting inside linebacker James Farrior agreed.

"That's a selfish play. You've got to think about more than just yourself," the Steelers' defensive co-captain said. "We need him out there. He understands that, but this one doesn't count. That's the good thing."

In addition to Taylor's ejection, the Steelers were flagged for personal foul and roughing the passer penalties at New Meadowlands Stadium.

"That's Steelers beating the Steelers," Tomlin said. "We're smarter than that. We have to be smarter than that. Those things are unacceptable 12 months a year."

Taylor, who didn't get much more than an early shower out of Saturday night, said the fight was an isolated incident.

"Kind of lost it a little bit," the eighth-year veteran said. "What we need to do, where we want to go, that can't happen."

As a fan or a teammate I don't need an apology. All I care to know is that it won't happen again.

It will happen again... he may not get thrown out but he will get a 15 yard penalty to extend a drive when he makes a good play on the other teams sideline. The guy just can't run back on the field without responding to a taunt from a player who is standing on the sideline.

It seems to happen once a year after stopping a team on 3rd down.

Respect Ike's "swaggin" or get 2 pieced in the helmet.

I don't get to see as many Steelers games as I would like but I didn't realize that Ike got called for a lot of these penalties.

I didn't either. Sounds like a figment of someone's imagination.

Once a year isn't often.... and it was said with humor. Take the Tom Brady preseason face off and relax a little guys.

As a fan, I personally really never liked the guy or his play. He's an adequate corner, but not one of the top-tiered CB's in this league..

Need I bring up these names as a reminder?

No matter how much you might dislike him, you have to consider Ike to be a stand-out among that group.
