No, it's a good point, just a different point from what I'm saying. I'm saying that that Dixon is in his third year now. He has played more than well enough in his limited shots to earn preseason time with the first team. We can sit here and say- he can't do this, he can't do that- it's predominately opinion and not fact. Put him in and let's find out. What is there to lose?

Which equates to the entire season being a wash.

I'm sure if they started Dixon and we lost several of the first four games we would hear the anti-Tomlin posters ripping him for putting an inexperienced QB in. The bottomline is that Dixon's wonderful pre-season has been against 2d, 3rd and 4th team players.

Why do some posters continue to think that the coaches don't see or learn anything in everyday practices and team meetings and fans can figure it all out watching a pre-season game from their La-Z-Boys and Barcoloungers? Takes either arrogance or delusion to new heights.

Anyone hear any Dixon post-game quotes?

Re: Lombardi says no brainer - Start Dixon this week

From a talent perspective this is indeed a no brainer. But, what I believe some are failing to see is the fact that Dixon is a RFA next season. They no doubt want to keep Dixon and they want to do so reasonably. What if he lights it up for 4 games? Great for four games but they will lose a significant talent that they developed to another team. No way the Steelers pay starter money to a back up. So, by sitting Dixon they give themselves a shot at signing him for reasonable money.

Then you tender him a #1 draft pick in return and if someone wants him you take the #1.

No way Dixon would even WANT to stay if Ben is staying long term. Contracts have nothing to do with this.

Just a theory but I believe they want to sign Dixon long term and for reasonable money. He is only signed through 2011. He is very unlikely to sign a new contract with the Steelers if he sees success. So, after this season you throw a high end #2 QB contract at him without him knowing his full market value.

He's a RFA. All they have to do is tender him high enough to warrant a #1 if someone takes him.

I do not have the #1 tender salary, but its not that high.

Leftwich is making $2 mil right now. They can sure as hell give that to Dixon in 2011.

Again, he is still only signed through 2011 then he is an unrestricted FA. If he blows up before then...the Steelers will have zero chance at signing him for 2012 and after. Considering there may not be football next season this is a huge concern.

I don't see why Dixon getting to play in a preseason game amounts to 4-6 regular season losses, or why Leftwich getting everything automatically anounts to 'season saved' I hear the same old smack after he outplays everybody that it's not real because its second string, but there's an easy to compare apples to apples

Infact i would make him take majority of the snaps in the remaining preseason games and if he shows some promise i would trade him.

If Dixon is the real deal i would trade him to Seattle or Chiefs for their 1st and 3rd Rd pick. I can dream...

When is the trade deadline? if he shows something, take it down to the wire and trade him to the bills. they need a qb. it'd never happen, and i'd to see them trade him, but I feel like we're gonna lose him anyway.

"Pittsburgh lacks talent on the offensive line"...this is the most important post in the entire piece. Why won't Baby Rooney come out and speak about this instead of crying about the running game? Tomlin and Colbert have been arrogant in their treatment of the OL.

The Steelers have failed to invest high draft choices on the OL for the last decade and the results speak for themselves. They finally use a first round pick on a OL and the player almost immediately looks like the best player in a mediocre group.

I can't stand Belichek but I give him credit for one thing. He realized his defense was getting old and weaker and so he completely transformed it in a couple of seasons. Wilfork is the only starter left from their Super Bowl defense. He didn't try and fool himself into believing they were championship caliber. Meanwhile the Steelers are stuck with the same crap OL for another season. It makes no sense to have a $100 million dollar QB get stuck behind a OL that can't pass protect. One of these hits to Ben is going to end the guys career (or at leas severely hamper it). I wonder what the Steelers will say then.
The Steelers’ went through seven consecutive drafts (2003-09) without taking an offensive lineman in the first two rounds, the longest such streak by any franchise this century.

The first guy drafted this year was oline.
The second guy we drafted last year was on the oline.

Dont you think Cowher deserves more "credit" than Tomlin for this?

I had given up on Urbik, but he actually looked pretty solid Saturday.
