My memory isn't what it used to be, but wasn't lefty considered to be a very smart qb when he came out of marshall? I don't remember his scouting report but i feel like it said something about being very football smart, but not as athletically gifted, though he had a cannon for an arm.

I was fortunate enough to see Leftwich play when he was at Marshall...it was a game against Kent State where the KSU QB was none other than Joshua Cribbs...but, I digress...

Leftwich had 400+ passing yards and 4 TDs...

When you consistently put up Xbox-type numbers in college, people tend to think that you're football smart...
Actually, my post was NOT about you...but, if the shoe fits, feel free to lace that &!+€# up and wear it.

I always remembered him being gritty and tough as nails with a big arm. The MAC has some great QB coaches who know how to groom NFL talent.

Not sure how old you are but Steeler fans never talked about fearing the brain of Lefty when we played the Jags.

We hated his ability to shake off tackles and check down to the RB's in the flat.

i mean from an x's and o's perspective. I can't remember if it was him or the other guy that year who could walk into the room and diagram everything (it was either byron, rex, or toilet). I can't remember which though.

old enough to know better, young enough not to care (31).
I remember that we gameplaned more toward their backs (especially taylor). and I can remember how tough they were. especially their defense. very few people talk about smart players unless it's manning. rarely does it come up.

Re: So Byron Leftwich is Smarter??? Say what??

Leftwich was a rarity coming out of college: a system QB with an NFL caliber arm...

Lots of system QBs are football smart, guys like Timmy Chang from Hawaii or any QB who graduated from Texas Tech...

The difference with Leftwich was the big-league arm...

To me, Leftwich has some similarities to Drew Bledsoe, though he isn't as prolific...

              Big, smart, strong-armed, big-hearted...

...and only earned a SB ring as a backup...

No not really..I just think King shouldn't be saying stuff like that. If you look at King's most recent Ben Roethlisberger column you can see how he nit picks everything Ben says and does yet he himself says something like this with Leftwich and Dixon.

But this is a Steeler Discussion board...maybe I should refrain from bringing up topics that you dont like? Maybe more Vanilla would suit you??

Haha...say what you like- as you said, it's a discussion board. It's still a throwaway line though..

It's like if Chadman called you a knucklehead- doesn't mean you ACTUALLY have knuckles on your head, but the reader understands what Chadman is getting at...

I wouldn't read anything into the line. The day before this was published King said:

I think one of my questions to the Steelers in Latrobe today will be: "Are you sure Dennis Dixon doesn't give you the best chance to win the first four weeks of the season?''

I thought I remember reading Dixon's wonderlic was extremely poor. That might be part of the source for the opinion.

yes, but can he play QB??

What did Vince Young score on the Wonderlic??? Seven- or some such ridiculously low number?

Not that VY is a great QB- but he does manage to win games, with a strong supporting cast.

Dixon scored a 29 on the Wonderlic, which is better than the 25 scored by both Roethlisberger and Leftwich.

This other site shows that Charlie Batch had a 13.5 (didn't even know they allowed half-points...I've only seen whole number Wonderlic scores), Terry Bradshaw had a 15, and Neil O'Donnell a 13.

Steeler teams featuring stat-driven, me-first, fantasy-football-darling diva types such as Antonio Brown & Le'Veon Bell won no championships.

Super Bowl winning Steeler teams were built around a dynamic, in-your-face defense plus blue-collar, hard-hitting, no-nonsense football players on offense such as Hines Ward & Jerome Bettis.

We don't want Juju & Conner to replace what we lost in Brown & Bell.

We are counting on Juju & Conner to return us to the glory we once had with Hines & The Bus.

                          Wow,

Marino 16. He tore up the 85 Bears and dominated with average WR's for many years. I think I have lost all credibility in this measurement.
