What exactly is the status of Mewelde Moore?

By all accounts, he's fallen way down on the depth charts, some even saying behind Red Man.

Did he do the big fail at some time or another? Is he not as dependable this year out of the backfield (including catching passes) as he has been? Are we all just full of BS, talking up Red Man, when there is a bona fide #2 he has to beat first?

    Inquiring minds want to know!

    (or is it "enquiring"?)

I don't think that Moore has fallen at all. He's a veteran who doesn't need a lot of work in the preseason games. Here is an article about Moore in the Tribune from about a week ago talking about Moore's status.

Moore is whatever the Steelers need him to be.

With the status of the ground game uncertain behind Mendenhall, Moore is the only other proven veteran running back on the roster.

"We knew when we signed him two years ago, he was a versatile player who could fit into a lot of different roles, and he hasn't disappointed,'' running backs coach Kirby Wilson said. "He's a guy who's always there whenever you need him. That's been his style since he's been here, and we hope that he continues to shine.''

In 2008, Moore filled in for Willie Parker and rushed for 99 and 120 yards and scored two touchdowns in consecutive wins against Jacksonville and Cincinnati.

Based on early returns in training camp, Moore will likely fill the same role in 2010.

Moore's official position is third-down back. He's a pass-receiving specialist who can get open coming out of the backfield and pick up first downs. He had 61 receptions in his first two seasons with the Steelers.

I think Moore is realistically your #2 and if Redman makes this team he is likely nothing more than a short yardage specialist.

Moore played briefly before Redman, I believe. That would make him 2nd string (technically).
Even if Bill Belichick was getting an atomic wedgie, his face would look exactly the same.

I don't think that MM has fallen at all, they just know exactly what they have with him. Guys like Redman, Summers, and Dwyer need to get extended looks so that the coaches can decide where they fit.

I think that Redman got so many carries because they wanted to see his fitness. Last year, he asked to be taken out because he wasn't fit. Then this year, they run the hell out of him in the first PS game. I think this was deliberate to see if he'd learned his lesson. Thought he looked good, looking forward to see more competition at RB.

As much as I think Redman is a value to this team, he is not 'above' Moore in importance yet.
Moore is your 3rd down back and with that comes significant time. With Mendi starting and Moore doing 3rd down and most sub duty, I expect Redman to get no more than 2-3 carries a game and maybe 10 plays.

That said, if Mendi goes down for any length of time, Redman will be carrying the load. Moore can't hold up to that punishment long term.
